What do you hope to do in this project?

In this project, I am hoping to create a music

video using my own song integrated with
another or, as a plan b, just my own music. I will
likely write a brand new song to help the video
follow a narrative in sync with the lyrics and the
instrumental as a whole. I demonstrated this
when I created my Kendrick Lamar edit during
Unit 1 and I will only write a brand new song if
plan b needs to take effect.

How will you go about completing this project?

I would like to find a song that would be able to integrate with my own then see if
there is any copyright held to that song as to whether I can use it or not. If that
will be an issue, if not then I will be very happy to continue. Once I do or don’t
have a song then I will start writing my own and attempting to use this song in
conjunction with the other taking inspiration from multiple artists and their music
videos examples of which are in my 750-word essay.

Who or what will you use as research and why?

I will use The Little Homies, Dave
Free and Nabil, the minds behind
most of Kendrick Lamar’s music
videos as inspiration for my music
video. They all have unique
techniques and visuals between
them, however, each project seems
similar as if all of them are equally
‘Kendrick Lamar’ just based on the aesthetic. You can tell Lamar has some
influence on the video’s creations to be so similar even though they have been
directed and written by different people, with the songs and videos alike
addressing different themes and topics.
Each of Lamar’s music videos has very out-there visuals. For example, in HUMBLE.
there are multiple scenes with this concept, burning heads, Lamar as the Pope and
the programmed camera movements, the shaking camera also- an effect I’d like to
recreate if possible. Kendrick Lamar - HUMBLE. Some of the best short films
I’ve seen are for pgLang which is Lamar & Free’s mysterious company or music
label, its true purpose is yet to be seen though Baby Keem has released, since
September 2020, music under pgLang LLC.

I will use these videos as further inspiration as well as the music videos.

What is your rough schedule for completing this project?

For the first few weeks I will see what kind
of work will be set out before me, like this
brief and my 750-word essay but in the
midst of that try to figure out from a list of
songs I have in mind, which would be the
most appropriate to perform with a video
and that may not be copyrighted, whether
that is an issue or not. If it is I will begin working on my own song to fit to a music
video and I will work with the music department to record that track. I will also
begin further research into these artists and make notes and connections to my
work. In the weeks following, I will plan storyboards and write scripts outlining
what exactly will happen throughout the video and start on casting, location
recce, set design, costume design, etc. Finally, I will leave about 3-4 weeks for
shooting and 2-3 weeks for editing to fully work with the shots I’ve produced,
with time for possible re-shoots and any last-minute changes. After those working
weeks, the last weeks before the deadline I hope to have everything completed
including an evaluation with space for re-visiting edits, teacher and peer feedback
and working on the finishing touches.
What equipment will you use and how?
I would love to use a series of cameras and recreate a group
of shots from Kendrick Lamar’s HUMBLE. music video
which all use the same technique of multiple cameras in a
circle being cut together with a frame in between them
creating the effect of a violently shaking camera all while
keeping the subject central and the video following
smoothly. I will also use the recording studio and college to
perform my track/ my half of the songs and ADR (additional
dialogue recording). Multiple applications from Photoshop to After Effects and
Premiere Pro, will all be used in conjunction with the planning and editorial side to
create a full music video.

What do you hope to learn from this project and what skills do
you hope to use in unit 4/FMP?
I want to learn the full possibility of myself and increase my knowledge in this
type of arena in terms of videography, planning, music recording and skills in the
various applications I will use. I will also like to bring
that side of the videography and editing across to my
FMP which was always my motivation for joining the
Level 4 Foundation course, to gain experience in those
areas to be able to move on having succeeded in
something previously unattainable.
