Previous Year Questions

1. If the perimeter and the area of a circle are numerically

equal, then find the radius of the circle.
[1M, 2021 Sample Paper]
A1. Perimeter of circle =2 r
Area of circle = r2
Given the perimeter and area of circle are numerically equal.
Therefore,
r2=2 r
r2−2r=0
r(r−2)
⇒ r = 0 or r = 2

2. Find the area of a sector of a circle with radius 6cm if

angle of the sector is 60°. (Take 𝜋 = 22/7)
[1M, 2021 Sample Paper]
A2. area of sector = (Φ/360°)* r²
Where Φ = angle of sector
area = 6*6*22/6*7
= 792/42 = 18.85
area of sector =18.85cm²
3. A horse tied to a pole with 28m long rope. Find the
perimeter of the field where the horse can graze. (Take 𝜋
= 22/7)
[1M, 2021 Sample Paper]
A3. given rope length=28m
Therefore radius is 28m
perimeter is nothing but circumference of circle is
2* 𝜋 *r = 2*(22/7)*28 = 176m
The perimeter of field the horse can gaze is 176m

4. If the area of a circle is equal to sum of the areas of two

circles of diameters 10 cm and 24 cm, calculate the
diameter of the larger circle (in cm).
[1M, 2016]
A4. R2 = r21 + r22
R2 = (r21 + r22) [ r1 = 10/2 = 5cm, r2 = 24/2 = 12 cm]
R2 = 52 + 122 = 25 + 144
R2 = 169 = 13 cm
∴ Diameter = 2(13) = 26 cm
5. The circumference of a circle is 22 cm. Calculate the area
of its quadrant (in cm2).
[1M, 2018]
A5. Circumference of a circle = 22 cm 2 r = 22 cm
2 * * r = 22cm

r= =

Area of quadrant = ¼ r2

6. If he is taken as , calculate the distance (in metres)

covered by a wheel of diameter 35 cm, in one revolution.
[1M, 2013]

A6. Radius (r) =

= 2 × × cm = 110 cm or 1.1 m
7. If the difference between the circumference and the radius
of a circle is 37 cm, then using = , calculate the
circumference (in cm) of the circle.
[1M, 2017]
A7. 2 r – r = 37 ⇒ r(2 – 1) = 37

𝑟 1 = 37
r = 37 * = 7 cm

Circumference of the circle = 2 r = 2* *7

= 44 cm

8. In Figure , find the area of the shaded region.

[1M, 2011]
A8. Area of shaded region

area swept by the minute hand in 5 minutes.
[3M, 2019]
A9.

10. In Figure, a square OABC is inscribed in a quadrant

OPBQ of a circle. If OA = 20 cm, find the area of the
shaded region. (Use = 3.14)

[3M, 2018]
A10. Diagonal of the square (OB) = Side √2
∴ r = 20√2 cm …[Side of square, OA = 20 cm
∴ = 90°
ar(Shaded region) = ar(Quad. Sector) – ar(Square)

11. Two circular pieces of equal radii and maximum area,

touching each other are cut out from a rectangular card
board of dimensions 14 cm × 7 cm. Find the area of the
remaining card board.
[3M, 2019]
A11.

Here r = , cm, L = 14 cm, B = 7 cm

Area of the remaining card board
= ar(rectangle) – 2(area of circle)
= L x B – 2 r2)
= 14 × 7 – 2 × × ×
= 98 – 77 = 21 cm2

are drawn with each side of square as diameter. Find the
area of the shaded region. [Use = 227]

[3M, 2018]
A12.

Area of shaded region

= 2(Area of square) – 4(Area of semicircle)
= 2 × 196 – 308 = 392 – 308 = 84 cm2

13. All the vertices of a rhombus lie on a circle. Find the area
of the rhombus, if the area of the circle is 1256 cm2
[3M, 2015]
A13. Let r be the radius of circle
In rhombus, AB = BC = CD = AD
⇒ AC = BD = 2r

14. In Figure, find the area of the shaded region, if ABCD is

a square of side 14 cm and APD and BPC are semi-
circles.

[3M, 2013]

A14. Side (diameter) = 14 cm

∴ radius, r = 7 cm
Area of shaded region
= ar(Square) – 2ar(semi-circle)
= (Side)2 – (2 * r 2)
= (14)2 – 2 * *7*7
= 196 – 154 = 42 cm2

15. In Figure ABCD is a square of side 4 cm. A quadrant of a

circle of radius 1 cm is drawn at each vertex of the square
and a circle of diameter 2 cm is also drawn. Find the area
of the shaded region. (Use = 3.14)

[3M, 2017]

A15. Area of 4 quadrants (a circle)

=4× (1)2
= sq.cm
Area of the square = (4)2 sq.cm = 16 sq.cm
Area of the circle at the centre = (r)2 = (1)2
= sq.cm
∴ Area of shaded portion
= Area of square – 2 (Area of circle)
= 16 – (11 + r) sq.cm

= 16 - 2 = 16 – 2

= 16 - =

= = 9 sq.cm

16. In the Figure, the side of square is 28 cm and radius of

each circle is half of the length of the side of the square
where O’ and O are centres of the circles. Find the area of
shaded region.

[4M, 2017]

A16. Side = 28 cm, Radius = cm = 14 cm

The area of the shade = Area of square
+ (Area of circle)

+ (Area of circle)
= Area of square + (Area of circle)

…[Area of square = (Side)2; Area of circle = r2

= (28)2 + 32 × 227 × 14 × 14
= 784 + 924 = 1708 cm2

and meets OP produced at B. Prove that the perimeter of
shaded region is r [tan + sec + – 1]

[4M, 2018]
A17.
18. In Figure, PQRS is a square lawn with side PQ = 42
metres. Two circular flower beds are there on the sides PS
and QR with centre at O, the inter- section of its diagonals.
Find the total area of the two flower beds (shaded parts).

[4M, 2019]
A18. PO = 42 m …[Given
PS = QR …[∵ side of square
OR = OP …[Radius of circle
Let OR be the radius of circle = x
So, PR = OR + OP = 2x
Using Pythagoras’ theorem,
⇒(PR)2 = (RQ)2 + (PQ)2
⇒(2x)2 = (42)2 + (42)2
⇒ 4x2 = 3528 ⇒ x2 = 882
⇒ x = √882 ⇒ x = 21√2
Area of one floor bed =
