atmosphere, caused by an increase of gases such as carbon dioxide in
the air surrounding the earth, which trap the heat of the sun
e.g. There will be less ice because of the greenhouse effect.

glacier /ˈɡleɪʃər/

Dialog (4 mins)
Role-play the dialog with your teacher twice, and learn the highlighted expressions by heart.
Jack: Your hometown is famous for winter camping. Do you get a lot of snow there?
Mary: We get quite a bit of snow, but it’s mostly just up in the mountains.
Jack: Lately there have been a lot of discussions about global warming. Have you experienced the
greenhouse effect, such as less snow in winter?
Mary: I think I do. I think there’s been less snow. It is quite noticeable that the glaciers on the
mountains have gotten smaller and smaller. Our living environment is in jeopardy.
Jack: Really! Do you think global warming may be getting worse?
Mary: I would say so, because people are producing more and more carbon dioxide.

TI: Take turns to play both characters. Emphasize and repeat the highlighted expressions.

Conversation (3 mins)
Suppose you are talking with your friend about global warming. Use the vocabulary and expressions
you’ve learned in Part A to complete the following conversation.

A: What is your opinion about _______?

B: It’s pretty serious, man. There have been tons of scientific studies, and the scientific
community says that the earth is heating up mainly because of the production of
______. Hints:
• in jeopardy
A: Yes, I heard the _____ are melting all over the world. • carbon dioxide
B: Besides, our living environment is ________. • glacier
• global warming
TI: Let S practice situational conversation with what he/she has learned in Part A. Answers are on the next page.

Discussion (4 mins)
Talk with your teacher about the following questions. Refer to the hints if necessary.

1. Please explain “global warming” in your own words.

Do you think the global warming is around us? Have you noticed some
climate changes caused by global warming? Give some examples.
Key to exercises on last
Hints: page:
• phenomenon/rising temperature/carbon dioxide… • global warming
• winter is less cold on average/less snow/summer is hotter/more • carbon dioxide
• glaciers
extreme weather/more heavy rain or no rain at all… • in jeopardy

TI: Let S practice speaking by answering the questions. Correct S as necessary.

Talk with your teacher about the following questions. Refer to the hints if necessary.
(4 mins)

2. Do you think people need to do something about global warming?

What will you do to fight against the global warming?
Hints:
• yes → the situation is severe/extreme weather patterns are increasing/people
are losing their homes due to sea level rise
no → the global warming is only a theory/global temperatures are always
fluctuating (波动的) throughout history
• use public transportation more often/protect plants…

TI: Let S practice speaking by answering the questions. Correct S as necessary.
