INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 2

BDA20103 DYNAMICS
SEM 1 2021 2022
Due Date : 26 December 2021
Q1 The 25 kg crate A as shown in Figure Q1 rest on the smooth incline plane. At initial
position the spring is originally stretched 0.45 m. At the instant shown, the crate is
applied with a horizontal force P = 800 N which leads to the motion at final position for
a distance of 3 m.

(a). Draw the free body diagram of all forces exerted on crate A.

(b). Find the total work done by all forces acting on the crate A.

(c). Determine the velocity and acceleration of the crate when it reached final
position.

(d). Calculate the kinetic energy of crate A at final position.

(15 marks)

Q2. A 70 kg skier that moves from rest at A is shown in Figure Q2. Suppose friction can be
neglected while the direction of the launching velocity at B and the orientation of the
underneath ground are 30° and 40° from a horizontal axis x, respectively, determine:

(a) the launching velocity of the skier at B using the formulation of conservation of
energy.

(b) the distance, s where the skier lands at C by considering motion in x and y axes.
(15 marks)

Q3. Figure Q3 shows a 1000 kg car hits a 4000 kg lorry. The car and truck has an initial
velocity of 30ms and 10ms , respectively. Suppose both vehicles move together
after the collision, determine:

(a) the common velocity of both vehicles just after the collision.

(b) the impact force on the car if;

(i) the car has a good crumble zone (0.3 s impact time).

(ii) the car has a weak crumble zone (0.1 s impact time).

(c) Give a brief comment based on the forces obtained in the above cases.
