Part Three. (15 marks) The language of young learners: adaptation and
accommodation

Rewrite the following passage in no more than 75 words to make it suitable for
reading by young learners. At the end of the passage, state what age and what
level you assume these young learners to be.

The Moon

The moon is a natural satellite of the earth. It spins on its axis with one side,
the ‘face’, turned permanently towards Earth. We can see that side clearly
from Earth, even with the naked eye, and with telescopes its geological
features can easily be made out in great detail. We can only see the dark side
by sending space probes and astronauts. Although the moon is the closest
object to Earth in space, it is still an average of 384,400km away, and it takes
three days to get there by rocket. In the mid-twentieth century, between
1969 and 1972, American astronauts went to the moon six times on Apollo
missions. The moon’s composition is rocky, with a surface heavily scarred by
meteorite impacts from millions of years ago that have formed craters up to
240km across.

A Big Surprise

I was very lucky as a child because my parents organised excellent parties. I usually
invited ten or twelve friends to my party. Severals days before I would give out
invitations. I remember the room looked really beatiful. In the dining room we had put
out the best plates, glasses and tableclothes. The children arrived sometimes in the
afternoon bringing presents for me. Before the birthday we played playstation,
football and basketball. Then we eatten pizza, sandwiches, and drunk tea and coka-
cola. My parents bringing cake with my age and cadles on the top. I blow out cadles
and my friends sang “Happy Birthday”. Those were the days.
