Traditional African music is primarily utilitarian in character. Birth, death, marriage,

succession, worship, and spirit invocations are all examples of ceremonial ceremonies.
Latin American music is the result of three key influences -Indigenous, Spanish-
Portuguese, and African cultures. It encompasses countries with a colonial history dating back
to Spain and Portugal.
The jazz genre began as an offspring of African slaves' music that moved to America. Since
then, it has grown into a variety of more joyful jazz styles that have been embraced and adapted
into other modern styles around the world.
Popular music refers to music intended to entertain large groups of people. Cole Porter,
George Gershwin, and Frank Sinatra were early pioneers of popular music. Today's idols
include Elvis Presley and the Beatles, as well as today's alternative and disco forms.
The genre of music known as Original Pinoy Music or Original Philippine Music, or
OPM for short, comes to mind when we think about contemporary Philippine music. It was
first used to refer exclusively to Philippine pop songs, mainly ballads, such as those that became
popular after the demise of its predecessor, the Manila Sound.
