(Acceptance Criteria: Ref. Section 406 of MoRT&H)

1. GENERAL

This item of work deals with construction of Wet mix macadam with approved
materials as per the specifications and shall be dealt in compliance to the clause
406 of specifications. The construction shall confirm to the specific alignment, lines
and grades given in the drawing.

2. PROCEDURE

Preparation of Mix:

1. The individual materials gradation shall be checked, combined, proportions shall

be fixed and combined gradation confirming to table 400-11 shall be arrived.
2. The individual bins of wet mix plant shall be calibrated for the particular size of
material.
3. Material shall be fed to the mixing plant bins provided for individual sizes of
aggregates to meet the required gradation.
4. Mixing plant shall be of suitable capacity having provision for controlled addition
of water.
5. While adding water, loss due to evaporation shall be taken in account.
6. Water in the wet mix shall not vary from the optimum by more than in the limits
of +1/-2 of OMC.

Preparation of Base:

7. The sub base (GSB) shall be made free from any kind of foreign matter. Before
laying, it should be noted that Sub base (GSB) surface made slightly wet.
8. The lateral confinement for wet mix shall be provided by placing material in the
adjoining shoulder portion.

Laying of Wet Mix Macadam – Ist layer (125mm thick):

9. The wet mix shall be transported from the mixing plant to the site with trippers.
10.The mix shall be spread with motor grader. The motor grader shall be capable
of spreading the material uniformly all over the surface. Its blade shall have
hydraulic control suitable for initial adjustments and maintaining the same so as
to achieve the specified slope and grade.
11.The mix shall be laid manually in places where the grader movement is not
possible.
12.High or low spots shall be rectified by adding or removal of materials as the case
may be.
13.The material shall be uniform and shall be free of pockets of fine material.
14.The compaction of wet mix shall be done as per clause 406.3.5. The rolling shall
be done with 80-100KN vibratory roller. The speed of the Roller shall not exceed
5KmpH. The rolling pattern shall be established in the trial stretch.
15.In portions having unidirectional cross fall/super elevation, rolling shall
commence from the lower edge and progress gradually towards the upper edge.
Thereafter, roller should progress parallel to the centre line of the road,
uniformly over-lapping each preceding track by at least one third width until the
entire surface has been rolled. Alternate trips of the roller shall be terminated
in stops at least I m away from any preceding stop.
16.Care shall be given at every stage so that there will not be any segregation.
17.The finished layer shall be checked for compaction in accordance to the
specifications given below.
18.All relevant QA and QC documents will be maintained for all stages of
construction.

Laying of Wet Mix Macadam – IInd Layer (125mm thick):

19.The toe line is marked and wooden stakes or iron pegs having uniform cross
section and sufficient length shall be driven and fixed on side of pavement at
suitable spacing.
20.The wet mix shall be transported from the mixing plant to the site with trippers.

28.The finished layer shall be checked for compaction in accordance to the
specifications given below. The top shall be checked for level control and shall
be within +10mm and -10mm of designed level.
29.All relevant QA and QC documents will be maintained for all stages of
construction.
