1. Scope:
This work shall consist of installing & construction of pre-cast Hume Pipe culvert as per
specifications conforming to the British standards. The construction shall confirm to the location,
specific alignment, lines and grades given in the drawing.

3. Material:
All materials used in construction of pipe culvert shall confirm to the requirements of BS EN
1916 / BS 1911. All pipes shall be inspected, tested & approved by Engineer prior to placing on
site. Bedding material in case found unsuitable shall be removed and replaced by well graded

sand or approved granular material up to the levels as stated in Design & Drawings and shall be
suitably compacted. The concrete used shall be of required grade as per drawing / technical
specification and shall be as per approved design mix.
4. Procedure:
a) Demolition of existing structures if exists (i.e. existing RCC Pipes, headwall, wing wall
and etc.,) shall be done and disposed in a proper manner as directed by Engineer.

b) Prior to start of the work TBM shall be established jointly with the Engineer’s
representative in a location, which shall not be disturbed during the course of work.
c) Setting out of the location of culvert shall be carried out jointly with Engineer‘s
representative as per the approved construction drawings.

4.1 Excavation:
The foundation bed for pipe culverts shall be excavated true to the lines, grades and to the levels
shown on the drawings. During the excavation, any soft, spongy, or any other unsuitable
materials encountered shall be removed up to 300 mm depths from bed level and widths as
specified in the drawing.

done with 1:4 cement sand mortar in such a way, that it is smooth and consistent joint with
the interior surface of the pipe. The joints shall be kept covered and damp for at least 4 days.
b) The casting of head wall, till required level (2nd lift and further lifts) shall be carried out
confirming to the drawings.
4.4 Backfilling:
a) The backfilling shall be done after the joining material has hardened or encasing has done as
per approved design and drawing. The backfill soil shall be clean, free from boulders.
Backfilling shall be carried in layers not exceeding 200 mm to the pipe top level & 300 mm

above the top of the pipe shall be done. Material shall be imported if required & compacted
using mini compactors, plate compactor or vibratory compactors as per site conditions.
b) The aprons shall be constructed as per approved drawing & BS technical specifications.
5. Safety Measures
a) All personnel shall be provided with required PPEs.
b) Suitable barricades/safety tapes shall be erected on the sides / edges of excavation to prevent
vehicles falling in the stretch.

c) Suitable warning signs shall be erected & traffic shall be warned before entering into such
sections.
d) Flagmen shall be stationed on either ends of the approach road to guide the traffic during
movement of transit mixer for concreting.
e) Precautionary retro-reflective signs shall be erected & safety cones / painted bamboos shall
be placed in areas where this activity is being carried out by obstructing existing traffic lane.
f) Proper approach road / diversion road shall be provided.
g) Provide a safe means of access for all excavations.
