Project Title: EPCCOM FOR GAS PROCESSING PLANT
Subject: Bottom Section Length Change for Precast Piles

CONTRACTOR / VENDOR
Description: (include any Safety or Environmental Impact)
Precast type piles are used for spherical tank foundations, and the total length of the precast piles is 14≤L
≤ 21m, with top section ≤ 12m and bottom section ≤ 9m, and joint type between top section and bottom
section is welding. for details please refer to HFY-3800-0000-CIV-DWG-0020_0 Pile Typical Drawing.

During fabrication of these precast piles, NB company fabricated the precast piles with top section length
as 7m and bottom section length as 12m, and total length is 19m, and the total length can meet the
requirement of 14≤L≤21m, but the bottom section length (12m) is larger than the value specified in HFY-
3800-0000-CIV-DWG-0020 requirement (≤9m).

However, CONTRACTOR does not see any technical concerns with this deviation due to the following
reasons:

1. It is just a minor deviation from the typical drawing (HFY-3800-0000-CIV-DWG-0020_0); where there
is change in the pile joint location from 9m (as per drawing) to 12m (actual) above the pile tip without
compromising the pile performance, pile structural integrity and quality.
2. Generally, these pile joints are made with high-quality materials, and designed to bear greater stresses
than even that the pile's standard section, therefore, location of pile joint has no impact on pile
performance and structural integrity as long as the pile joint comply the project specifications/standard
requirements.
3. Also, generally, minimum length of pile segments of pre-cast piles is 5 – 6m, which means that pile
joints can be even at every 5 – 6m, which is very common in the industry.
4. Further, point of fixity in the pile generally ranges from 8 – 10 times pile diameter, which in this case
maximum is 10 x 300 mm = 3m below pile cut off level. However, in current case, the joint is at 7m
below the pile cut-off level, which is much below.
5. As per geotechnical investigation report and calculation sheet, precast pile tension is 0, this is because
the weight of spherical tank plus weight of foundation is larger than wind load or seismic load, so there
is no tension load required for these precast piles, and only vertical load is required. Hence, the current
fabricated piles (top 7m, bottom 12m) can fully meet the spherical tank vertical load requirements.
6. The connection type between the top section and bottom section is by welding, and CONTRACTOR
will reinforce the welding connection by modifying the connecting steel angle from L75x6 to L75x8 and

make sure the steel end plates around the pile edges are welded together fully and strongly.
CONTRACTOR will also enhance the welding quality surveillance during piling to ensure good quality
of the pile connection.

Therefore, based on the above, CONTRACTOR request COMPANY to approve the same

Recommended Solution:
CONTRACTOR recommend that the sections of precast piles on spherical tank area to be changed to
7m(top section)+12m(bottom section) as per actual pre-casting.
There will be no cost or schedule impact due to this TQ.
