Tutorial Set 3

Problem 1: Saturated liquid water enters the boiler at a pressure of 70 bar, and saturated vapour enters
the turbine. The condenser pressure is 0.06 bar. This engine runs on a Carnot cycle. Determine:
(a) the thermal efficiency
(b) the quality of steam at the beginning and end of the heat rejection process
(c) the net work of the cycle per unit mass of water flowing, in kJ/kg
(d) the heat transfer from the working fluid passing through the condenser, in kJ/kg of
steam flowing.

Problem 2: Consider the Rankine power cycle in which, steam enters the turbine as superheated steam
at 6 MPa. The steam exits from the turbine as 100% saturated vapour. After condensing, saturated liquid
enters the pump at a pressure of 0.01 MPa. Determine

(a) show the cycle on T-s diagram

(b) The rate of heat transfer into the boiler per unit mass
(c) The net power generation per unit mass
(d) the thermal efficiency
(e) show the cycle on T-s diagram

Problem 3: From first principles prove the following relations

dU = TdS - PdV and dH = TdS + VdP

Hence or otherwise prove that

é dT ù édP ù
êëdV úû = -êë dS úû
S V

Problem 4: Given the definition of the Gibbs function as:

G = H - TS

Show that
æ ¶V ö æ ¶S ö
ç ÷ = -ç ÷
è ¶T ø P è ¶P øT

Problem 5: (a) Derive an expression for the increase in entropy of a perfect gas, when it
undergoes a process, in terms of its mass, its initial and final temperatures and volumes and its Cv and
Gas Constant (R).
(b) A rigid adiabatic chamber is divided into two compartments of equal volume of 0.04 m3 by means
of frictionless, weightless piston which is initially held in place with a pin. One compartment is
evacuated while the other component is filled with air at 0.6 MN/m2 and 290K, The air can be
assumed to be an ideal gas with R = 0.287 kJ/kg K and Cv = 0.72 kJ/kg K. The pin is removed and
the gas comes to equilibrium. Show from entropy consideration whether the process is reversible or
irreversible.
