Cylindrical Pressure Vessel Structures Lab Report

1 Aim:
Estimation of Strains in a thin-walled cylindrical pressure vessel under both open as well as closed end
conditions and Compare strain guage readings with theoretical values

2 observations:
• Specimen Material: Aluminium
• Diameter of the cylinder: 86 mm
• thickness of the cylinder wall: 3 mm
• poisson ratio(µ): 0.33

3 Formulation:
Stress in x (longitudinal) and y (lateral) direction:
P r
σx =
2t (1)
P r
σy =
2t
Strain in x (longitudinal) and y (lateral) direction:
σx σy
x = −µ
E E (2)
σy σx
y = −µ
E E
Strain in other direction:
x + y x − y
= −µ cos 2θ (3)
