II. SUMMARY
The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic led to major changes in health care and education
options for all health care employees. It was emphasized that the need for adequate guidance
of all surgical residents and potentially lengthening the surgical training program. The study
shows a significant impact of the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic on the surgical
trainee program, with a major distribution of residents with a decrease of surgical exposure
and education.
III. NURSING IMPLICATIONS
a. To Nursing Practice
In nursing practice, this article helps people to be aware of the things around them and
the actions they do since they are the one’s in control of the lives of people who are
hanging and everything will be under their control and actions.
b. To Nursing Education
As a student nurse, this article has provided me with further information on the
importance of education in terms of the surgical trainee program on the exposure of
people. This serves as a guide to other health care professionals to know the importance
of every action or single action that may result in a big impact later on.
c. To Nursing Research
In nursing research, this is a good article for others to continue since it is interesting and
it is related to what is happening in the present. In this research, it shows a significant
impact of the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Dutch surgical trainee
program, with a major redistribution of residents with a decrease of surgical exposure and
education.
IV. PERSONAL INSIGHTS
Personally, I agree that we need to be fully trained first before exposing us into situations that
are really needing full attention to for us not to commit mistakes that may put people’s lives
at risk. We need to be fully aware of the things we do especially in our field since we are not
entering in a world that is filled with chances that’s why we need to be serious and really
hands on with the patients we encounter.
