AIM: To generate and measure High Voltage DC using
140 KV DC Test set.
Equipments required: DC test set, Control Panel.
Components of a DC Test Set : Test transformer,
silicon rectifier, smoothing capacitor, measuring resistor,
measuring sparkgap, support insulator, electrode,
connecting rod, connecting cup, floor pedestal, spacer
bar.
Components of a Cascaded Voltage Doubler Circuit:
1. 2 HV transformers
2. 4 capacitors
3.4 rectifiers
4.1 isolating transformer
5.Load resistance
Theory :
Cascaded voltage doublers are used when larger output
voltages are needed without changing the input transformer
voltage levels. The rectifiers R1 and R2 with transformer T1
and capacitor C1 and C2 produce an output voltage of 2V.
This circuit is duplicated and connected in series or cascade
to obtain a further voltage doubling of 4V. T is an isolating
transformer to give an insulation for 2Vmax since the
transformer T2 is at a potential of 2Vmax above the ground.

The voltage distribution along the rectifier string is made

uniform by having capacitor of equal value. The
arrangement may be extended to give 6V, 8V or so on by
repeating further stages with suitable isolating transformers.

Advantages of this circuit :

Both full-wave and half wave rectifier circuits produce a DC

voltage less than AC maximum voltage while cascaded
voltage doublers can produce higher voltages.

Disadvantages :

Arrangement becomes cumbersome if more than 4V is

needed with cascaded steps.

Procedure:
1. Remove the earth rod of the given test set.
2. Switch on the control switch.
3. Now switch on the main switch.
4. Switch on the primary of transformer.
5. Switch on the secondary of transformer.
6. Slowly raise the voltage in steps upto 140kV with the
help of a voltage regulator switch.
7. At each step, keep on noting the DC charging voltage
and current.
8. Reverse the process for discharging of equipment.
Precautions:
1. Experimental set up should be cleaned properly.
2. Ensure that earth switch is disconnected from set up
before start of experiment.
3. After switching on the equipment, ensure that latch is
functioning well and door is properly closed. There should
not be any human inside the lab area before conducting
the experiment.
4. After conducting the experiment discharge the
equipment with the help of earth rod.
