PERIODIC TABLE

Representative Elements

 The elements of these groups show periodicity in filling electrons in their atom. They contain 1 to 8
electrons in their outermost shell. The elements of these groups are called Representative Elements.
 Representative elements are in solid, liquid and gaseous state.
 They are metals, nonmetals and metalloids

Noble gases

 Their outermost shell contains 8 electrons.

 They are chemically stable and do not take part in chemical reactions.
 Group 18 elements are known as noble gases.
 They are monatomic molecules.

Transition Elements

 The elements included in groups 3 to 12 in the periodic table are transition elements.
 They are metals.
 They form coloured compounds.
 They show similarities in chemical properties in groups as well as in a period.

Lanthanoides and Actionides

 The elements between 57 to 71 of period 6 and 89 to 103 period 7 are arranged at the bottom of the
periodic table. These elements are inner transition elements.
 Inner transition elements from Lanthanum to Lutetium of period 6 are called Lanthanoides.
 Inner transition elements from Actinium to Lawrencium of period 7 are called Actinoides.
 Lanthanoides are also called rare earths. Actinoides after Uranium are artificial.
