Activity 1: Types of Definitions

Directions: Choose terms used in the field of teaching that can be defined in different ways as
suggested below.
A. Formal-sentence definition (5 terms)
1. A teacher is a person who teaches, especially in a school. ___________

2. The Department of Education is the executive department of the


Philippine government responsible for ensuring access to, promoting
equity in, and improving the quality of basic education.

3. The school principal is the highest-ranking administrator in an


elementary, middle, or high school.
4. Education is the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction,
especially at a school or university.

5. A lesson plan is a teacher's detailed description of the course of


instruction or "learning trajectory" for a lesson which details vary
depending on the preference of the teacher, subject being covered, and
the needs of the students.

B. Informal definition (5 terms)


1. Tiffany met the qualifications for the nursing job since her baccalaureate
proved she had graduated from college.

2. The academy suspended three students because of the grave offense


they have done to the school.

3. The undergraduate has certain examinations in each year, and four


"commencements" are held every year for the purpose of conferring
degrees of the students.

4. Mr. Castro spent hours preparing the lesson and ended up having an
excellent lecture towards the class.

5. Ms. Sandra was teaching her students all about literature and instructed
her students to read about the biography of William Shakespeare.

C. Amplified definition (5 terms) Indicate what particular techniques you use in expanding each.
1. Literature is derived from the Latin litteratura which derived itself from
littera: letter or handwriting, which was used to refer to all written
accounts, though contemporary definitions extend the term to include
texts that are spoken or sung.

2. A lesson plan is a teacher's detailed description of course of instruction


for a lesson which is developed by a teacher to guide class learning.

3. School principals are responsible for establishing a schoolwide vision of


commitment to high standards and the success of all students.

4. The most common purpose of homework is to have students practice


material already presented in class so as to reinforce learning and
facilitate mastery of specific skills. Preparation assignments introduce
the material that will be presented in future lessons.

5. Graduation comes from the Latin graduatus which means graduated,


from "gradus", meaning step. It is the receiving or conferring of an
academic degree or diploma.
