which applies to all categories of private schools. This has been challenged in the High
Court by the linguistic Anglo-Indian minority schools and the case is currently being heard.
La Martiniere College is part of the group of petitioners. Nevertheless, the College has
adjusted its fee structure, in keeping with the provisions of the regulations.

ESTATE

After a period of 11 years, the dispute with the Lucknow Golf Club was amicably resolved
with a fresh lease on mutually acceptable conditions being signed. With this, the Lucknow
Martin Charities receives a considerably improved lease rent, the College students learn the
game during school hours and the general state of the property is well maintained. Similar
legal procedures are to be implemented with other tenants of the Estate.

La Martiniere Estate is vast and has to be monitored constantly. A large number of

personnel are employed for this. Much land is used for agriculture, the produce of which is
used in the College kitchens. In August, 2018 a brazen attempt to grab a ten acre tract of
land was made by certain individuals using muscle strength and firearms. Within hours,
and in pouring rain, heavy machinery moved into the area and the piece of land was
barricaded with sophisticated deterrents. The Trustees and Local Committee of Governors
were alerted and after putting legal procedures in place, the land was cleared of
encumbrances and handed back by the District Administration and Police.

common difficulties is a part of the learning process.

Within the city, different groups of boys have visited centres for social service
establishments for those underprivileged. Academic interest has been generated by visits to
Banks for project work, history walks, art and photography exhibitions.

Reunions of Old Boys

Old boys of the College and programmes conducted by them have become a regular activity
in the College calendar. The informal monthly get-together known as Sunday-Bunday
continues to provide a cheerful opportunity for all those visiting the city to return to school.
This is ably coordinated by Mr Ratnesh Gupta who serves as a member of the executive
Committee of La Martiniere Alumni (LMA). The LMA organized a Musical Festival –
Season II as a fund raiser on 12 January, 2019. This showcased the special talent of the
Mumbai based Rock Band ‘2 Blue’.

Formal reunions were held in Lucknow for different batches in the closing months of the
year. Of these, the most difficult to organize must have been the reunion of alumni from
different parts of the country and the world in September, 2018, who congregated in
Lucknow to coincide with Founder’s Day. Representatives from of the batches of the 1960s
returned with their families and participated in every event taking place in the College.

On 17 November, 2018, the Batch of 1968 returned to the Blue Room to commemorate 50
years of leaving the College. They were followed by the Batch of 1997 who gathered just
after 20 years to get together. On 22 & 23 December, 2018, the Batch of 1993
commemorated their Silver Jubilee in the College and its precincts. Both Batches, returning
two decades, unveiled tablets in the College to mark their presence.
The annual Alumni Get-Together this year for both Colleges in Lucknow was held on 15
December, 2018 in the College. Special entertainment and choice food made this a special
occasion. Lt Gen. Bipin Puri, VSM, serving as Director General, Armed Forces Medical
Services and Mrs Neena Mathur, Batch of 1979, Principal of Army Public School, from the
Girls’ College were awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Celebration of Festivals

The College continues to promote the integration of communities as part of its explicit
policy. Festivals and holidays are celebrated with traditional gaiety, especially in the
Boarding House. Every holiday is preceded by a brief talk at Assembly regarding the
significance of the observance.

Farewell to Retiring Members of Staff

In the closing week of the session that concluded on 30 March, the College bid farewell to
three members of Staff who retired: Mrs Daphne Egbert, Mr V. K. Srivastava and Mrs Nita
Singh. They had contributed their best years of service to the College. The Farewell they
received included a Chapel Service and Assemblies in both campuses. These expressions
were warm and sincere.
CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITY

The vast co-curricular programme of the College is co-ordinated by Mrs Sheba Siddiqui.
This forms an integral part of the College programme. There is an increasing trend to
permit the boys to take over the planning of diverse events, under minimum supervision of
teachers. This is seen to bring out the best in competitors as well as those with special skills
in organization. Boys travel the width of the country to participate in different events.
Their merit is invariably rewarded.

The overall record of special achievement in co-curricular activities in which pupils of the
College participated in events in the city and around the country is summarized in Appendix
II
SPORTS
The College was represented at a number of fixtures outside the College where the boys
proved their ability. There are now 30 sports disciplines in which the boys participate and
for which there are specialized training facilities. Most activities have trained Coaches to
assist in the development of the programme. A significant feature to encourage
participation from among the Day-Scholars is Class Leagues in different sports, held in
continuation of the school timetable. This has encouraged wider participation due to
convenience in timings. The entire Sports programme of the College is coordinated by Mr
Alfred Gomes, Games’ Secretary. The achievements of the boys in sports activities is
summarized in Appendix III

Within the College, inter-House competitions and activities were keenly contested. The

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Thanks are extended to the Trustees of the Lucknow Martin Charities and the members of
the Local Committee of Governors, La Martiniere College for their guidance in all issues
related to La Martiniere.

The cooperation of Mrs Aashrita Dass Principal of La Martiniere Girls’ College, in all
matters that concerns the Colleges jointly, is recorded with sincerity and gratitude.

Special thanks are extended to the alumni of the College. Their professional assistance the
many areas of College life in which they now have expert knowledge is a store of goodwill
which the College uses from time to time. The generous material gifts presented from time
to time is gratefully received. Significantly, many prefer to function in complete anonymity,
giving back to the College to the extent that they feel they have received. Their discretion in
this matter is respected.

Individual contributors towards the development and progress of La Martiniere College and
the estate have increased to the extent that it is now neither possible nor discreet to publicly
record. Nevertheless, the thanks of the College is personally forwarded to each contributor
at the appropriate time.

I am especially grateful to the team of Staff that runs La Martiniere College, Lucknow for
their dedication and commitment to the areas of work which are defined for them.
Invariably, most members of Staff go much beyond the call of duty. Often areas of work
overlap. They carry out every task with autonomy, accountability and efficiency.

The boys of La Martiniere provide each person working here the impetus to put in their
best. The natural gratitude, goodwill and affection that is received from the boys makes the
job that is done far worthier than a professional responsibility. It is a great privilege to have
these boys in our care.

Vive La Martiniere!
