ABSTRACT
Candles were prevalent until 1879, when the first light bulb was invented and other more
advanced illumination methods took their place. It was at this stage that candles began to be seen
as a decorative object rather than a solely practical item. Candles in all types, sizes, and colors
were readily available, and the first scented candles were introduced to the public. Candles were
well known as excellent mood enhancers, presents, and festive pieces by the mid-1980s. Our SIP
was originally based to show how good and unique the Philippine Citrus smelled. Our scented
candle has half Calamansi scent in it with vanilla extract being the other half. Although our
Scented Candle came out as 50-50 success and fail. The scent of the Calamansi was still
effective. Judging by the data and analysis of our SIP product, the Vanilla Calamansi Scented
Candle smells really good especially when the citrusy and fresh scent evaporates into thin air
once the candle is lit thus, clearly makes the scent pleasant and comfortable to ones sense of
smell. Adding more Vanilla extract than Calamansi based from our experience is not that nice
since vanilla extract is a strong liquid, but it depends to how much you put. If you put too much
vanilla extract it will be the stronger scent and if you put too much Calamansi it also then be the
stronger scent. So in making the perfect scent for our scented candle you need to follow this
measurements. For the vanilla extract, you’ll only need 1 teaspoon and for the calamansi you
should have 7 of it or if you like to add the scent of the calamansi you could add 1-2 more.

INTRODUCTION

 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The research study that we, group 6, made is Vanilla-Citrus (calamansi) Scented

Candle. A vanilla extract gives fragrance and scents to a particular product. It is a liquid

flavoring that is derived from the vanilla beans and it commonly used in baking, cooking,

and etc. Pure vanilla extract contains several hundred additional flavor compounds.

Calamansi is a small kind of citrus that is smaller than lemon, it is green and healthy and it

can add flavor to a different dishes. It is also the trade mark of the Philippines. In addition,

calamansi tastes bitter yet citrusy. Scented candle is a candle but has a mixture of different

flavors that gives the candle an aroma, the smell of the scented candle evaporates sweet

smell and scent from the hot wax and from the solid candle itself. (Wikipedia, 2021)

As researchers, the reason why we chose this type of research title is because we

want to help those people who have anxiety, depression, and any kind of mental problems.

We want to help them feel relaxed in all the pain that they are facing and help them calm

by giving them the best aroma. We researchers, are confident that this

research title can help many people within or out and this can also be used when

there is a power shortage or also commonly called as “brownout” especially in this period

of time when the pandemic is happening. This can be used during prayers like rosary and

Eucharistic celebrations. Nowadays, people are looking for unique decorations like

scented candles for beautifying houses and attracting people. The scented candle is also

eco-friendly because we could use this instead of lights, flashlights and other appliances

that uses energy and power so that we could save electricity not only for ourselves but

also for the future generations. In addition, scented candle is not just for decorations,

healing, or power shortage purposes only but instead economics is also included such as

buy and sell trademarks and import and export processes. This particular product is easy

to make and with that, you can make your own scented candle and sell it to earn some

money for a living. 6

 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This is the reason why our Science Investigatory Project is mostly needed now

especially this quarantine because it has benefits that could help many people and the

environment such as candle makers and sellers. This will also expand the market for

Filipino farmers because this will enhance their rural economic development. This act as a

guide for students that will conduct similar research in the future, whether we are the first

one to conduct the research subject or not this could serve as the representation of our

country because of our citrus “calamansi” that is mostly known as the trademark of the

Philippines and this might get popular in others countries worldwide. In addition, we

researchers also investigate about the possible benefits or effects in inhaling the scent of

the vanilla-citrus scented candle and in few minutes of investigating we found out that the

scent of the calamansi can help you from breathing especially when you are sick or when

you have a cold and it will help you feel relaxed with this cozy feeling. (Slideshare, 2014)

 SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The research explains how scented candles can be utilized as an air purifier and air

freshener. We tried to experiment on combining the scents of the vanilla extract and

calamansi. As our first attempt at Mae Calumpang’s house, she did the experiment

and then she added 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and 1 calamansi together in a plate.

The outcome of the first attempt failed since we put too many vanilla extract that

could lead to a much stronger bad odor and aroma that covers the scent of the

calamansi. For the second attempt at Ashley Lorca’s house, she streamed our

experiment on our meeting call, then we changed the measurements into ¼ teaspoon

of vanilla extract and 1½ calamansi. Afterwards, we combined it together and the

scent was much better than the first attempt. Some of the problems while doing the

experiment were lack of materials, because we only have limited materials since we

are at home, lack of time, because we were doing research, getting more information,

and experimenting. And lastly, experiencing technical difficulties while we were

having a meeting.

 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Scented Candles often has a plenty of scents but most of them are already

common. We want to test a new scent as to create a brand new fragrance. If we

desire to produce a new scent, then we need to confirm and experiment on it. As

researchers, clearly we all have problems when it comes to the experimentation.

Main Problem:

Does the Vanilla Citrus (Calamansi) Scented Candle smells good or bad?

Sub Question:

1. Does adding more vanilla extract than calamansi smells better?

2. Which of the following ingredient, vanilla extract or calamansi, is most likely

the stronger scent?

3. What are the right measurements to make do we need to follow in order to

get the scent we hoped for?

We want to examine if the fragrance smells good and if the given measurements of

the ingredients can give us, researchers, the right amount of smell that we are

expecting for.

 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

VANILLA EXTRACT

Vanilla extract is an alcohol solution containing vanillin, an organic compound that

is responsible for the vanilla flavor of vanilla beans. It is made by macerating vanilla

beans in the solution until the flavor has been well-infused. Pure vanilla extract is

specifically defined by the FDA as a solution containing 13.35-oz of vanilla beans

per gallon of solution and with at least 35% ethyl alcohol by volume. The rest of the

volume of vanilla extract is typically made of water. Ethyl alcohol is used because

it is flavor neutral, meaning that it does not impart a taste of its own, and alcohol in

general is a good solvent, easily extracting the vanillin from the vanilla bean and

infusing it into the rest of the solution. In short, vanilla extract is an alcohol-based

solution that allows you to get a more flavor and more use out of a single vanilla

bean. (Bakingbites, 2011)

CALAMANSI

Calamansi scientifically known as Calamondin × Citrofortunella microcarpa

belongs to the Rutaceae family. Calamansi is a popular citrofotunella; this means it

is an intergenetic hybrid between the genes of a citrus and Kumquat.

Calamansi is known by various names throughout the globe the most popular ones

being calamonding, calamondin orange, calamansi, calamandarin, golden lime,

kalamunding, kalamansi, Philippine lime, Panama orange, Chinese orange, musk

orange and acid orange. Calamansi is widely cultivated in different parts of the

world such as Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Southern China. This fruit is

available throughout the year in Philippines and is mostly found in its unripen green

state. This is more of an oranamental tree than fruit bearing tree despite the fact that

its fruits are edible. Calamansi has a distinct characteristics of a wing-like

appendages on the leaf stalks and white or purplish flowers. With attractive colors

making it an eye pleasing ornamental plant the fruit of the calamansi is none the

less, shaped similar to small round lime sizing upto 25-35 mm in diameter. The pulp

of the fruit is orange in color and has a very thin orange peel when it ripens. Each

fruit bears 8 to 12 seeds each. (FuitsInfo, 2004)

SCENTED CANDLE

A scented candle, made with fragrant oils mixed into the wax, gives off a pleasant

aroma when burning. A scented candle is a nice touch in a bathroom, especially

when guests are over, in a bedroom, or any room of the house. A scented candle

can create an ambiance of healthfulness and well-being. Unlike incense, scented

candles do not add smoke to the air. Unlike incense, most scented candles do not

produce smoke. There are many different ways to make a scented candle. If poorly

made, the wax will smell nice when brought to the nose, but lighting the candle

might not produce any scent

whatsoever. This can be a frustrating waste of money, but a little knowledge can

help you to identify quality candles. (Wisegeek, 2021)

Results and Discussions

20
SAINT PAUL UNIVERSITY DUMAGUETE
DUMAGUETE CITY, PHILIPPINES
A.Y. 2020 - 2021

(Feb.16 4:00-5:30 PM) – Mae Calumpang Trial

We attempted to put just a small amount of wax from a large piece of wax. We

boiled it for 6-7 minutes and placed the scent while boiling. The scent is made up

of 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract and 3 pieces of calamansi. We put it on a container

with the candle wick. The candle wick doesn't had any metal on it and was not

sticked under. It was placed in the center but because it was not that stable it

sometimes move side to side. We waited for about 1 hour until it dried and we

took the excess candle wick. We tried to light it up and it was lit. The only

problem was that the scent was not that strong, yes it can be smelled but once it

was lit, it only smelled like a regular candle without any scent. So far our first

attempt was a fail.

A.Y. 2020 - 2021

(Feb.17 4:00-5:30 PM) – Hueghey Zyd Dennoyo

For our second attempt, we melted the wax for 12-15 minutes after that, we mixed

7 Calamansi Juice and 1 tsp of vanilla extract then mixed it for 3 mins. After that

we added the Mixture to the melted wax and mixed it again for 4-5 mins then put

it in a glass jar. The experiment was a success.

(Same time as Zyd’s) – Kyeichi Cray Abella

23
SAINT PAUL UNIVERSITY DUMAGUETE
DUMAGUETE CITY, PHILIPPINES
A.Y. 2020 - 2021

As we started making our research experiment, we started boiling the water in a

claypot, placed a solid candle wick then while waiting for it to melt about 10mins

or more it started melting then we brought the product out that is mixed with 7

pieces of calamansi and one teaspoon of vanilla extract then we poured it inside

the melted candle wick and mixed it. Then we waited for it to dry about 30mins

close, as it got dry we tested it but we noticed the scented mixture had submerged

below, although as we lit the candle it did smell vanilla but it wasn't strong enough

so as we know the scent was 50 percent success but 50 percent fail for not having

a strong scent where you could smell it while it's lit cause you would need to go

nearer then 50 percent for candle making.

(Feb. 18 3:30 – 5:00 PM) – Mae Calumpang

We first placed the candle wick using a glue gun under to secure it. Then we

placed a stick at the top of the container with the candle wick to tighten and

straighten it at the center. After doing so, we then made the scent for the candle.

We placed 7 calamansi in a small bowl and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract in another

bowl. Before mixing it together, we first separate the seeds of the calamansi. We

mixed it until it is fully combined. We then placed in the double boiler a piece of

paraffin wax leaving the ¼ small amount of it behind. We waited for about 14

25
SAINT PAUL UNIVERSITY DUMAGUETE
DUMAGUETE CITY, PHILIPPINES
A.Y. 2020 - 2021

minutes for it to melt. We placed the scent while it was still boiling then mixed it

up for 3 minutes. Once mixed, we placed it on a container and waited for about 1

hour and 30-40 minutes to dry. The scent was incredibly good though there are

some juices of that calamansi that was not dissolved and mixed with the wax that

can be seen below the candle. All I can say is that, the experiment can be a success

and a fail in some ways. Bu the important part was that the scent can be smelled

and the candle can be lit. At least we tried our best and never gave up.

(Feb. 18 5:00-6:30 PM) – Ashley Lorca

February 18 (Thursday) at 5 pm, the day and time I did my experiment research.

The first thing we did was to combine the two ingredients, the 9 calamansi and 1

teaspoon of vanilla extract, and after we combined these ingredients, we also

prepared the double boiler with water to heat, together with the paraffin wax in it.

27
SAINT PAUL UNIVERSITY DUMAGUETE
DUMAGUETE CITY, PHILIPPINES
A.Y. 2020 - 2021

While waiting for the paraffin wax to melt, we prepared the glass cup and put the

candle at the center and we used the stick so that the candle wick will remain

straight at the center. After the paraffin wax melted for about 17 minutes, we

poured the scent into the melted wax, the one we mixed, and mixed it thoroughly

with a spoon. For about a few minutes, we turned off the stove and we poured the

scented wax into the glass cup, also the one that we prepared. We finished the

process at exactly 5:45 pm and waited for 45 minutes to dry but while waiting for

it to dry we noticed that the scent submerged and become visible at the bottom of

the candle. But it did not end there, after a minutes of thinking, we’ve got an idea,

and that was to put another calamansi at the top of the candle, and for me its 50-50

success and fail, though it did not reach our expections and gives strong aroma, it

still smells juicy.

RECOMMENDATION

We’d like to recommend for future researchers that in making the Vanilla

Calamansi Scented Candle, using Calamansi essential oil or scent instead of the

real fresh Calamansi is stronger and more applicable. We researchers would also

like to suggest to research more about scents especially using fresh citrus fruits

28
SAINT PAUL UNIVERSITY DUMAGUETE
DUMAGUETE CITY, PHILIPPINES
A.Y. 2020 - 2021

(orange, lemon, etc.) because we realized that scented candles are more effective

and useful when using an essential oil or extract. It is also easier to melt the wax

when you cut it into flakes. Using soy wax and beeswax as an alternative is also

recommended because it is cleaner and not harmful than paraffin wax.

CONCLUSION

Based on the outcome of the experiment, our scented candle can be used as an air

purifier and freshener. There are many other aromatic scents but Calamansi is

more suitable for people who likes to relax and to cure their anxiety using the

fresh and citrusy smell of the Calamansi. Putting in many Vanilla extract than

calamansi couldn’t irritate our nose and wouldn’t overpower the scent of the

calamansi.
