CASSAVA
 One of the famous root crops of all times is Cassava. Cassava (Manihot
esculenta), also known as manioc, tapioca, yuca, and mandioca, is a
domesticated species of tuber, a root crop originally domesticated perhaps as
long ago as 8,000–10,000 years ago, in Southern Brazil and Eastern Bolivia
along the Southwestern border of the Amazon basin, and today, it remains a
staple crop in many developing countries as it is highly protean, nutrient-
packed and energy-dense.

 Cassava is today a primary calorie source in tropical regions around the world,
and the sixth most important crop plant worldwide. Cassava is popularly
known in the Philippines as Balanghoy or kamoteng-kahoy, it is utilized mainly
as food, dried chips for feed, and starch, and contributes of about two percent to
gross value-adding in agriculture.

 There are two kinds of cassava plants: sweet and bitter. Bitter cassava plants
have a higher level of cyanide, and they have to be washed and crushed well
before they are cooked. This will remove all harmful toxins. Once that has been
done, you can grind the roots of cassava plants into flour to prepare different
kinds of dishes. Sweet cassavas, on the other hand, contain lower levels of
cyanide, and you may eat them as traditional root veggies.

digestive system converts this toxin into cyanide, which can prove to be fatal.

farmers opted to plant cassava during early part of wet season (starting
June-November) for rainfall availability.
 Cassava plant is a tropical plant which requires warmer atmosphere along
with humid climate. However, the price of cassava is an important factor
that farmers take in consideration for harvesting.
 Cassava has a relatively long growth cycle compared to other important
crops. Farmers normally harvest cassava when the age of 9-12 months or
sometimes it takes an average of 10-12 months — up to 24 months. In
