Regional Overview
• Bahawalpur has a glorious and vibrant history that dates back
thousands of years. Princely state of Bahawalpur was founded by
Nawab Sadiq Muhammad Khan-I in 1727 AD. In 1951 AD, the State
was merged with Pakistan by Nawab Sir Sadiq Khan-V. Bahawalpur
Region is comprised of three districts namely Bahawalpur,
Bahawalnagar and Rahim Yar Khan. It spreads over 451 Km in length
(Northeast to Southwest) and 120 Kms in width (North to South),
with an area of 45,589 square Kms. Bahawalpur Region has 16 Police
Sub Divisions and 73 Police Stations in three districts having an
estimated population of 11.49 millions.
• It links the Sindh Province with upper Punjab through KLP road. Now
it is going to play a vital role in the economy of the country through
hosting a variety of CPEC projects like Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park and
M-5 Motorway covering a length of almost 200 Kms in the districts of
Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan.
• Bahawalpur Region is embellished with the most elegant landmarks
such as the Derawar Fort, Darbar Mahal, Sadiq Garh Palace, Noor
Mahal Palace, Bhong Mosque, Nagar Mahal and the ancient city of
Uch (set up by Alexander the Great in 325 BC). The soil of Bahawalpur
Region is fertile and known for cotton production, which has recently
paved way for Sugarcane crop. 09 sugar mills have been set up in the
Region.
Bahawalpur
• District Bahawalpur is situated in the Punjab province of Pakistan. It is
the 12th largest city in Pakistan with an estimated population of 3.66
millions having an area of 24,830 square Kms. Bahawalpur has a total
of 06 Police Sub Divisions (Saddar Bahawalpur, City Bahawalpur,
Yazman, Ahmadpur East, Khairpur Tamewali and Hasilpur), 24 Police
Stations and a total police strength of 2,842 with 1:1,518 police-
population ratio. Bahawalpur district has 17 PHP posts. The city is
situated some 90 Kms from Multan, 410 Kms from Lahore, about 298
Kms from Faisalabad and about 700 Kms from the Federal Capital,
Islamabad. Bahawalpur was announced as one of six cities in Punjab
whose security would be covered for better policing through Punjab
Safe Cities Authority.
• In Bahawalpur, there exists Drug Court, Anti Terrorism Court and
Bench of Lahore High Court having jurisdiction upto whole region..
• The Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park at Bahawalpur is the first ever solar
power plant in the country and has a capacity of generating 1,000
MW electricity and is spread over 10,000 acres of land. It has an
airport and a medical college
• Bahawalpur is a fertile area along the Sutlej River. The main crops are
wheat, gram, cotton, sugarcane, whereas dates and mangos are
profitable fruits. Sheep and cattle farming generates export in the
form of wool and hides. Soap making and cotton ginning are
important industries besides sugar factories. Womenfolk make
embroidery at home and delicate handmade pottery is also prepared.
The barren tract of Cholistan/Rohi is inhabited by nomadic shepherds.
• The climate is mainly hot and dry. In summer the temperature
reaches above 40ᵒ C. Since the city is located in a desert environment,
there is little rainfall.
Bahawalnagar
• District Bahawalnagar is situated in the South East region of the Punjab
province of Pakistan. The district of Bahawalnagar is spread over an area of
8,878 square Kms and has 2.98 millions of population. It comprises of 05
Police Sub Divisions (Saddar Bahawalnagar, Minchinabad, Chishtian,
Haroonabad and Fortabbas). Bahawalnagar has 21 Police Stations and a
total police strength of 2,048 with 1:1,388 police-population ratio.
Bahawalnagar district has 15 PHP posts.
• Bahawalnagar, originally known as Rojhanwali, was a small settlement
consisting of few huts and shacks. This village Rojhanwali still exists at a
distance of about 2.4 Kms North of the Bahawalnagar Railway Station. In
1904, its name was changed to Bahawalnagar after the name of Nawab
Muhammad Bahawal Khan Abbasi-IV. The district was set up in 1952.
• Bahawalnagar is about 250 Kms South of Lahore and 180 Kms East of
Bahawalpur. River Sutlej flows on the Northern side at a distance of
about 9.5 Kms from the city. In the year 1900–1901, first Police
Station Post was established. In 1914 Bahawalnagar was elevated as
Tehsil and the Police Post Jeweka was established.
• The main crops are wheat, gram, cotton and rice. Sheep and cattle
are farmed at large scale in the desert areas.
Rahim Yar Khan
• City of Rahim Yar Khan was known as "Naushehra" till 1881. Due to
similarity of name with city of Naushehra (KPK), the ruler of Bahawalpur
State, Nawab Sadiq Muhammad Khan-IV, renamed it after his first son. The
district is bounded on the North by Muzaffargarh District, on the East by
Bahawalpur District, on the South by Ghotki (Sindh) as well as Jaisalmer
(India), and on the West by Rajanpur District. Rahim Yar Khan was elevated
as a separate district in 1943.
• The district has an area of 11,880 square Kms and comprises 05 Police Sub
Divisions (Rahim Yar Khan City, Rahimyar Khan Sadar, Sadiqabad, Khan Pur
and LiaqatPur). Rahim Yar Khan has 27 Police Stations and 13 Police Posts
and a total police strength of 3,131 with 1:1,466 police-population ratio. It
has 20 Patrolling and 10 Riverine Posts. The total population of Rahim Yar
Khan district is 4.81 millions.
• The climate of the Rahim Yar Khan is extremely hot and dry in the
summer season which varies to cold and dry in winter. It has an
international airport and a medical college. It is situated on the main
railway line and National Highway linking Karachi, Lahore & Peshawar.
• Rahim Yar Khan is one of the largest producers of cotton, sugarcane
and mango in the country. Agriculture is the occupation of 65%
people. Well known industries like Unilever, Coca Cola, Fauji Fertilizer
Company, Fatima Fertilizers and 06 sugar mills have been established
in Rahimyar Khan District.
