PRINCIPLES OF EFFECTIVE SPEECH DELIVERY

(MODULATION)

I. LEARNING SKILLS
A. Most Essential Learning Competency
The learner realizes the rigors of crafting one’s speech by proficiently delivering
various speeches using the principles of effective speech delivery.

B. Objectives
The learners are expected to:
1. Define modulation
2. Discuss the importance of modulation in speech delivery
3. Perform exercises to improve modulation

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

The second principle that you are going to learn about is modulation. Modulation
refers to the adjustment of your pitch and timbre to suit the message and purpose of
your speech.
When you speak, you have to vary the quality of your voice to engage your audience
more effectively. When you don’t do this, your audience might lose interest in your
speech and their attention might be somewhere else. Modulation may mean the
difference between a boring speech and a lively one.
III. ACTIVITIES
A. Practice Tasks

PRACTICE TASK 1. TRUE OR FALSE

Determine whether each of the following statements is true or false.
1. Varying one’s pitch is not a factor to consider because the message is more
important than the delivery.
2. Speaking in a monotonous tone will surely engage the audience.
3. Speaking fast is better than speaking slowly.
4. Speaking loudly is better than speaking softly.

PRACTICE TASK 2. READ AND LEARN
Read the text below to learn about modulation.
When you modulate your voice, you adjust the pitch and tone. You also adjust your
pace or the speed with which you talk. You may go fast or slow depending on your
goal. What is clear is that the pace of your delivery should help you put across your
message more effectively. Speaking fast is not necessarily better than speaking
slowly, and vice versa.. Same rule applies to speaking softly and loudly. Also, you
should pause or take necessary breaks to make your message clear to your
audience.
If you speak in a monotonous tone, you run the risk of boring your audience and
consequently fail in your speech delivery.
Why is modulation important? First, it binds the audience. Second, you engage them
and capture their attention when they hear you vary your voice quality. Third,
modulation shows confidence and emotions which are both important in sustaining
audience attention.
So how do you modulate your voice? You have to assess it by listening to it. Listen
to yourself as you recite lines in this module or any line from a book of your choice.
Adjust how fast and slow you read the lines. Put some emotions to the lines by
making your voice shrill, raspy, thin, thick, mellow, or whatever quality that is suited
to the emotion you are trying to demonstrate. Make your voice go deeper if you want
to sound authoritative or go higher if you want to add interest to your speech or want
to emphasize something. Your modulation will eventually improve the longer you
practice.
PRACTICE TASK 3. READ ALOUD
Recite these sentences to improve your modulation. Vary your pitch, tone, and pace.
1. I never said that we were meant to be romantic partners.
2. I have always considered my adviser to be my role model.
3. The man told the woman that they would meet each other as soon as the
quarantine was over.
4. Students have to prioritize their studies if they want to have a bright future.
5. He failed the test because he did not read and understand the instructions.
ASSESSMENT I. TRUE OR FALSE
1. Changing one’s pitch, tone, and pace is essential to make the speech
interesting and engaging.
2. Speaking slowly is better than speaking fast.
3. Speaking softly is better than speaking loudly.
4. Modulation gives life and vibrancy to speech delivery.

2
Recite the following with the appropriate tone, pace, and pitch.

You are a child of the universe

no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,

whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,

it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
