Hello learner! This First unit of the second quarter is all about the Electromagnetic
Spectrum. In this unit, you are going to consider the following question: What determines
the effects of electromagnetic radiation on living things and the environment? Proceed to
Let’s the first activity to ignite your learning. Have a great fun while doing the activities. God Bless!
ACTIVITY 1: Be Aware!
Instruction: Study the article below and answer the questions that follow.
Harmful Effects of Electromagnetic Radiation
Source: https://www.defendershield.com/harmful-effects-of-electromagnetic-radiation
For most people, it is impossible to go even a day without coming into contact with electronic devices such as
laptops, tablets and cell phones. People rely on these technological tools for work, communicating with friends
and family, school, and personal enjoyment.
Most people don’t seem to realize, however, is that all of these electronic devices are known to emit waves of
Electromagnetic Radiation. Even people who are aware of this fact often ignore it, but once you know all of the
adverse effects this type of radiation can have on your health, you start to pay more attention. Some people may
try to convince you that the negative effects of Electromagnetic Radiation are simply a hoax thought up by
extremely paranoid people. Unfortunately, research is proving that this is not the case at all. Electromagnetic
Radiation (EMR) studies repeatedly shown gene mutations and DNA fragmentation, which can cause cell
mutation and cancer.
Processing Questions:
1. What are the examples of electronic devices?
______________________________________________________________________________________
2. What do these electronic devices emit?

Electricity can be static, like the energy that can make your hair stand on end. Magnetism
can also be static, as it is in the refrigerator magnet. A changing magnetic field will induce
a changing electric field and vice-versa – the two are linked. These changing fields form
electromagnetic waves. Electromagnetic waves differ from mechanical waves in that they
do not require a medium to propagate. This means that electromagnetic waves can travel
not only through air and solid materials, but also through the vacuum space.
Electromagnetic wave is a wave that is created as a result of vibrations between an
electric and magnetic field.

OFFLINE ACTIVITY
Instruction: Read the passage below. Feel free to underline, mark, and encircle the terms in the passage.
The terms light, electromagnetic waves, and radiation all refer to the same physical phenomenon:
electromagnetic energy. This energy can be described by frequency, wavelength, or energy. All three are related
mathematically such that if you know one, you can calculate the other two. Radio and microwaves are usually
described in terms of frequency (Hertz), infrared and visible light in terms of wavelength (meters), and x-rays
and gamma rays in terms of energy (electron volts).
Frequency
The number of crests that pass a given point within one second
is described as the frequency of the wave. One wave – or cycle –
per second is called a Hertz (Hz), after Heinrich Hertz who
established the existence of radio waves. A wave with two cycles
that pass a point in one second has a frequency of 2 Hz.
Wavelength
Electromagnetic waves have crests and troughs similar to those
ocean waves. The distance between crests is the wavelength.
The shortest wavelengths are just fractions of the size of an
atom, while the longest wavelengths scientists currently study
can be larger than the diameter of our planet!
Energy
An electromagnetic wave can also be described in terms of its energy – in units of measure called electron volts
(eV). An electron volt is the amount of kinetic energy needed to move an electron through one volt potential.
Processing Activity:
This is what I learned from the reading passage. I learned that the terms ____________________, electromagnetic
waves, and ________________ all refer to the same physical phenomenon: electromagnetic energy.
This energy can be described by ___________________, ____________________, or _____________________.
The number of _________________ that pass a given point within one second is described as the frequency of the
wave. One wave – or cycle – per second is called ___________.
The distance _____________ crests is the wavelength. I also learned that an _____________________ is the amount of
kinetic energy needed to move an electron through one volt potential.

This is what I learned from the video. I learned that the distance between crests is called __________________. The
number of these crests that pass a given point within one second is described as the _____________________ of the
wave. Adding _________________ increase the frequency of the wave and makes the wavelength _________________.
OFFLINE ACTIVITY
Instruction: Read the passage below. Feel free to underline, mark, and encircle the terms in the passage.
There are seven different types of Electromagnetic (EM) waves. They are arranged in a gradual progression
from the waves of lowest frequency to the waves of highest frequency. This arrangement of EM waves is called
electromagnetic spectrum. In order of increasing frequency, the EM spectrum includes radio waves,
microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-ray, and gamma ray.
Processing Activities:
This is what I learned from the reading passage. I learned that there are _______________ different types of EM
waves. They are in gradual progression from the waves of _________________ frequency to the waves of
_________________ frequency. This _____________________ of EM waves is called electromagnetic spectrum.

Ultraviolet
X-ray 1 x 10-8 to 1 x 10-11
Gamma Ray Less than than or equal to 1 x 10-11
Processing Activity:
Of all types of EM waves, radio waves has the ______________________(longest, shortest) wavelength while Gamma
rays has the ______________________(longest, shortest) wavelength. The wavelength range of radio wave is greater
than or equal to ________________ (1 x 10-1 m, 1 x 10-11 m) but not less than the microwave wavelength range.
Furthermore, the wavelength range of microwave is 1 x 10-1 m to 1 x 10-3 m which is ________________(shorter,
longer) than the wavelength range of radio wave. However, the wavelength range of microwave is
_______________(shorter, longer) compared to Gamma rays. The visible light spectrum has a wavelength range of 7
x 10-7 m to ____________________(4 x 10-7 m, 1 x 10-8 m). The visible light is the only type of EM waves that is visible
to the human eye. Visible light is composed of the following colors of light: Red, ____________________, Yellow,
_____________, Blue, and Violet. Among visible lights, Red light has the ___________________(longest, shortest)
wavelength range while violet has the ________________________________________(longest, shortest) wavelength range.
As you look from left end (radio wave) to right end (Gamma ray) of the electromagnetic spectrum, the
wavelength of EM waves ____________________(increases, decreases).
Step 1 – Observe the frequency ranges of each of the forms of Electromagnetic (EM) waves.
Step 2 – Complete the table below. The frequency ranges of Radio wave, X-ray and Gamma ray are already
answered for you.
Frequency Range (Hertz)

Visible Light
Red
Orange
Yellow
Green

Violet
Ultraviolet
X-ray 3 x 1016 to 3 x 1019
Gamma Ray Greater than or equal to 3 x 1019
Processing Activity:
Of all types of EM waves, radio waves has the ______________________(lowest, highest) frequency while Gamma rays
has the ______________________(lowest, highest) frequency. The frequency range of radio wave is less than or equal
to ________________ (3 x 109 Hz, 3 x 1011 Hz) but not greater than the microwave frequency range. Furthermore,
the frequency range of microwave is 3 x 109 Hz to 3 x 1011 Hz which is ________________(lower, higher) than the
frequency range of radio wave. However, the frequency range of microwave is _______________(lower, higher)
compared to Gamma rays. The visible light spectrum has a frequency range of 4 x 1014 Hz to
____________________(7.5 x 1014 Hz, 3 x 1016 Hz). The visible light is the only type of EM waves that is visible to the
human eye. Visible light is composed of the following colors of light: Red, ____________________, Yellow, _____________,
Blue, and Violet. Among visible lights, Red light has the ___________________(lowest, highest) frequency range while
violet has the ________________________________________(lowest, highest) frequency range.
As you look from left end (radio wave) to right end (Gamma ray) of the electromagnetic spectrum, the
frequency of EM waves ____________________(increases, decreases). As you can observe in the electromagnetic
spectrum, when frequency increases, ionization energy also ___________________(increases, decreases) because
frequency and energy is directly proportional. Radio wave therefore has the lowest
___________________(wavelength, energy) of all types of electromagnetic waves while Gamma rays has the highest
(wavelength, energy).
