UNIT 15: Trạng Từ (Adverbs)
I. LÝ THUYẾT
1. Phân loại
Trạng từ có thể được chia thành các loại như sau:
- Trạng từ chỉ cách thức (adverbs of manner): bravely, fast, well, slowly
- Trạng từ chỉ địa điểm và phương hướng (adverbs of place and direction):
down, up, near, far, north, there
- Trạng từ chỉ thời gian (adverbs of time): now, soon, then, today, yet
- Trạng từ chỉ tần suất (adverbs of frequency): always, never, often, once
- Trạng từ chỉ mức độ (adverbs of degree): fairly, hardly, rather, quite, very,
too
- Trạng từ chỉ nhận xét (comment adverbs): certainly, apparently, luckily
- Trạng từ chỉ góc nhìn (viewpoint adverbs): financially, logically, technically
- Trạng từ hội tụ (focusing adverbs): precisely, simply, particularly, primarily
2. Cách hình thành trạng từ
Đa số trạng từ được hình thành bằng cách thêm đuôi “–ly” vào cuối các tính từ
tương ứng:
brave → bravely fair → fairly certain → certainly
Chú ý:
- Các tính từ kết thúc bằng “–y” khi chuyển sang trạng từ sẽ đổi “–i” rồi thêm
“–ly”:
happy → happily lucky → luckily
- Các tính từ kết thúc bằng “–e” sẽ giữ nguyên rồi thêm “–y”:
extreme → extremely sure → surely
Trường hợp ngoại lệ:
true → truly due → duly whole → wholly
Trạng từ của “good” là “well”

Một số trạng từ giữ nguyên cách viết khi chuyển từ tính từ sang:
back hard* little right*
deep* high* long short*
direct* ill low still
enough kindly near* well
far late* north/east/etc. wrong*
early just* much/more/most* straight
fast pretty* left

Các từ “*” bên trên cũng có dạng thêm đuôi “–ly”:

lately = recently
deeply (dùng cho cảm xúc):
I was deeply offended.
mostly = chiefly
nearly = almost
shortly = soon
3. Vị trí và cách sử dụng trạng từ
3.1. Trạng từ chỉ cách thức (adverbs of manner)
Trạng từ chỉ cách thức diễn tả một hành động đã xảy ra như thế nào.
Trạng từ chỉ cách thức:
- Thường đứng sau động từ:
She did well on her exam. (Cô ấy làm tốt bài kiểm tra)
- Hoặc đứng sau tân ngữ
He shut the door loudly. (Anh ấy đóng sầm cái của)
Nếu như câu có dạng “động từ + giới từ + tân ngữ” thì trạng từ có thể đứng trước
giới từ hoặc sau tân ngữ:

I waited for them patiently = I waited patiently for them
Nếu như tân ngữ chứa nhiều từ thì ta đặt trạng từ trước giới từ:
I looked suspiciously at the people standing at the door over there.
Tương tự, nếu câu có dạng “động từ + tân ngữ” mà tân ngữ chứa ít từ, ta có thể
đặt trạng từ sau tân ngữ:
She typed the report hastily.
Nếu như tân ngữ chứa nhiều từ ta đặt trạng từ trước động từ:
She hastily typed the report that she had to turn in 10 minutes.
3.2. Trạng từ chỉ địa điểm và phương hướng (adverbs of place and
direction)
Các trạng từ nhóm này thường đặt ở sau động từ (nếu câu không có tân ngữ)
hoặc đặt ở sau “động từ + tân ngữ” hoặc “động từ + giới từ + tân ngữ”:
He went away.
I study abroad.
John met his wife here.
They looked for their wedding rings everywhere.
“Here” và “there” có thể đặt trước “be/come/go + chủ ngữ danh từ”:
Here comes Johnny.
There’s John.
Nếu như chủ ngữ là các đại từ thì “here” và “there” đứng trước chủ ngữ:
There she is.
Here I come.
Các trạng từ “away”, “down”, “in”, “out”, “off”, “over”, “around”, etc. có thể đứng
trước “động từ chuyển động + chủ ngữ danh từ”:
Away went my teacher.
Down fell the cat.
Nếu như chủ ngữ là các đại từ thì các trạng từ trên đứng trước chủ ngữ:

3.3. Trạng từ chỉ thời gian (adverbs of time)
Trạng từ chỉ thời gian (“afterwards”, “eventually”, “lately”, “now”, “recently”,
“soon”, “today”, “tomorrow”, etc.) thường đứng ở đầu hoặc cuối câu:
I have to go to school tomorrow.
Today I went to the gym.
Tuy nhiên các trạng như “daily”, “weekly”, “monthly”, etc. chỉ có thể đứng ở cuối:
I work out daily.
I visit the doctor monthly.
Các trạng từ như “eventually”, “lately”, “now”, “recently”, “since”, “soon” có thể
đứng sau trợ động từ:
He’ll soon graduate.
3.4. Trạng từ chỉ tần suất
Trạng từ chỉ tần có thể chia thành 2 nhóm:
- Nhóm 1: always, frequently, often, continually, once, periodically,
twice, repeatedly, sometimes, usually, etc.
- Nhóm 2: ever, hardly ever, never, rarely, scarcely ever, seldom
Trạng từ thuộc cả 2 nhóm thường được đặt:
- Sau động tự “to be”:
She is always happy to see him.
- Trước các động từ chia ở thì đơn (hiện tại đơn, quá khứ đơn):
He rarely goes for a walk.
- Đặt sau trợ động từ thứ nhất hoặc sau “trợ động từ + chủ ngữ” trong thể
nghi vấn:
I have never seen such a big cat.
Have you ever been to Canada?

Trạng từ nhóm 1 cũng có thể được đặt ở đầu hoặc cuối câu trừ 2 trường hợp
sau:
- “Always” thường không được dùng ở đầu câu
- “Often” khi dùng ở cuối câu thường phải thêm “very” hoặc “quite”:
Often he skipped school.
He skipped school quite often.
Trạng từ nhóm 2 (trừ “ever”) có thể được đặt ở đầu câu nhưng phải thực hiện
đảo ngữ động từ:
Hardly did he find such a big rock.
Các trạng từ này không dùng với động từ chia ở thể phủ định
He doesn’t never play football. → He never plays football.
3.5. Trạng từ chỉ mức độ (adverbs of degree)
Trạng từ chỉ mức độ được dùng để bổ nghĩa về mức độ cho động từ, tính từ
hoặc trạng từ.
Trạng từ chỉ mức độ được dùng ở trước động từ, tính từ hoặc trạng từ:
He is absolutely right.
I almost caught the bird.
She runs extremely fast.
“enough” được dùng ở sau động từ, tính từ hoặc trạng từ:
I have had enough.
The child isn’t big enough.
She doesn’t write fast enough.
3.6. Trạng từ chỉ nhận xét (comment adverbs)

Các trạng từ chỉ nhận xét có thể đứng ở đầu, giữa hoặc cuối câu. Để nhấn mạnh
rằng trạng từ bổ nghĩa cho cả câu, ta sử dụng dấu phẩy ngăn cách:
Apparently, he has left the town.
3.7. Trạng từ chỉ góc nhìn (viewpoint adverbs)
Các trạng từ chỉ góc nhìn dùng để nêu rõ xem người nói đang đề cập tới vấn đề
từ khía cạnh hoặc góc nhìn nào.

Các trạng từ này thường được đặt ở đầu hoặc cuối câu, ngăn cách bởi dấu
phẩy. Ta có thể đặt chúng ở giữa câu nhưng phụ thuộc vào ngữ cảnh và tính
mạch lạc của câu:
Physically, he is a weak boy.
The country has been suffering, financially.
He could, technically, participate in the Olympics.
3.8. Trạng từ hội tụ (focusing adverbs)
Trạng từ hội tụ dùng để hướng sự chú ý của người nghe tới một phần của câu.
Có 3 dạng chính của trạng từ hội tụ:
- Thêm thông tin (“also”, “as well”, “too”):
He will come with us as well.
I also would like a cup of tea please.
- Nhấn mạnh sự hạn chế thông tin (“just”, “alone”, “exactly”, “but”, “simply”,
“solely”, etc.):
Only Tom will come to the party.
The movie begins in exactly 30 minutes.
- Nhấn mạnh sự hạn chế một phần thông tin (“chiefly”, “mainly”,
“particularly”, “mostly”, “especially”, etc.):
He reads mostly fantasy novels.
I want everybody to come, especially John.
Vị trí của các trạng từ hội tụ phụ thuộc vào phần của câu mà người nói muốn
hướng sự chú ý tới:
I can only sing at the party. (Tôi chỉ có thể hát không thôi ở bữa tiệc)
Only I can sing at the party. (Chỉ có tôi mới được hát ở bữa tiệc)
I can sing at the party only. (Tôi chỉ có thể hát ở bữa tiệc mà không
đâu khác)
