FIRE ON DECK

AS SOON AS THE FIRE HAS BEEN DETECTED


1. Deck Officer has been informed about a beginning of a fire through the manual fire 
alarm, phone etc.)

2. Call the Master 

3. Inform the Engine Room and put engine on stand by. 

4 Stop Intake Ventilation

5. An investigation of the area involved has been done 

6. If no follows up from the investigation muster the fire team /rescue team / cooling team 
to the buffer area

7. Evacuate unnecessary personnel and passengers from the buffer area and make sure 
that all accesses are interdicted

8. Vessel position available in radio room, satellite terminal and other automatic distress 
transmitters, updated as necessary

9. Inform the Designated Person ashore 

10. At sea alter course and speed to reduce draft and minimise fire spread 

11. If in or near port alert Port Authorities, shore fire service, fire brigades, make sure that 
the International Shore Connection is properly fitted in place

12. If the fire breaks out sound “ FIRE ON BOARD GENERAL ALARM” 

13. Close automatic and manual fire doors 


14. Close watertight doors 

15. Shut down cargo and /or bunker operations /tank washing if any 

16. Isolate deck area electrical circuits 

17. Close doors, skylights, portholes 

18. Check for missing crew 

19. OPERATE FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM 

20. At sea exhibit light / shapes

21. At sea prepare lifeboats (if possible) 

22. Navigational warnings broadcasted on all distress frequencies 

23. Distress message send if fire not under control on all distress frequencies 
IF THE FIRE HAS BEEN PUTTED OUT 

1. Thorough investigation of the area has been carried out 

2. Has been Determine cause of fire , ascertained that all source of ignition have been 
removed

3. Area has been properly ventilated and all residual fumes blown out 

4. Electrical power mechanical ventilation has been restored 

5. Assess damage to shore installation if in port 

6.. Assess damage to own cargo (if any) 

7. Assess damage to own vessel 

8. If there is a spill of oil in connection with the fire, inform appropriate parties( refer to 
SOPEP or VRP plan if within USA territorial waters

9. If available take photos of area damaged by the fire 

10. Notify if spare parts required 

11. Enter all times and facts in log book 

12. Surveyor attendance/report 

13. P & I attendance / report 
