COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING Sub: Calculus 1. Date: 08/11/2021
OFFICIAL CONTEST Time: Slot 1 (120 Minutes)
(There are four pages) CODE: 130

Problem 1: If the radius of convergence of the power series ∑∞ 𝑛=0 𝐶𝑛 𝑋

𝑛
is 10,
∞ 𝑛−1
what is the radius of convergence of the series ∑𝑛=1 𝑛𝐶𝑛 𝑋 ? Why? (No more
than five steps.)
Problem 2:
a) By completing the square, show that
1/2 𝑑𝑥 𝜋
∫ =
0 𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 1 3√3

b) By factoring 𝑥 3 + 1 as a sum of cubes, rewrite the inte-gral in part (a).

1
Then express as the sum of a power series and use it to prove the
𝑥 3 +1
following formula for 𝜋:

3√3 −1 𝑛 2 1
𝜋= ∑( ) ( + )
4 8 3𝑛 + 1 3𝑛 + 2
𝑛=0

Problem 3: The graph of “f” is shown

a) Explain why this series is NOT the Taylor series of “f” centered at 1.
1.6 − 0.8(𝑥 − 1) + 0.4(𝑥 − 1)2 − 0.1(𝑥 − 1)3 + ⋯
b) Explain why this series is NOT the Taylor series of “f” centered at 2.
2.8 + 0.5(𝑥 − 2) + 1.5(𝑥 − 2)2 − 0.1(𝑥 − 2)3 + ⋯

Problem 4: Starting with the vertices 𝑃1(0,1); 𝑃2(1,1); 𝑃3 (1,0); 𝑃4(0,0) of a

square, we construct further points as shown in the figure: 𝑃5 is the midpoint of
𝑃1𝑃2 , 𝑃6 is the midpoint of 𝑃2𝑃3, 𝑃7 is the midpoint of 𝑃3 𝑃4 and so on. The
polygonal spiral path 𝑃1𝑃2 𝑃3𝑃4𝑃5 𝑃6𝑃7 … apporoaches a point 𝑃 inside the
square.
1
a) If the coordinates of 𝑃𝑛 are (𝑥𝑛 , 𝑦𝑛 ), show that 𝑥𝑛 + 𝑥𝑛+1 + 𝑥𝑛+2 + 𝑥𝑛+3 = 2
2
and find a similar equation for the 𝑦-coordinates.
b) Find the coordinates of 𝑃.

Problem 5: Right-angled triangles are constructed as in the figure. Each triangle

has height 1 and its base is the hypotenuse of the preceding triangle. Show that
this sequence of triangles makes indef-initely many turns around by 𝑃 showing
that ∑ 𝜃 𝑛 is a divergent series.

Problem 6: In designing transfer curves to connect sections of straight railroad

tracks, it’s important to realize that the acceleration of the train should be
continuous so that the reactive force exerted by the train on the track is also
continuous. Because of the formulas for the components of acceleration in
Section 13.4, this will be the case if the curvature varies continuously.

a) A logical candidate for a transfer curve to join existing tracks given by 𝑦 = 1

1
for 𝑥 ≤ 0 and 𝑦 = √2 − 𝑥 for 𝑥 ≥ might be function
√2
1
𝑓(𝑥 ) = √1 − 𝑥 2, 0 < 𝑥 < , whose graph is the arc of the circle shown
√2
in the figure. It looks reasonable at first glance. Show that the function
1 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≤ 0
1
√1 − 𝑥 2 𝑖𝑓 0 < 𝑥 <
𝐹 (𝑥 ) = √2
1
√2 − 𝑥 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≥
{ √2
is continuous and has continuous slope, but does not have continuous curvature.
Therefore 𝑓 is not an appropriate transfer curve.

b) Find a fifth-degree polynomial to serve as a transfer curve between the

following straight line segments: 𝑦 = 0 for 𝑥 ≤ 0 and 𝑦 = 𝑥 for 𝑥 ≥ 1. Could
this be done with a fourth-degree polynomial? Use a graphing calculator or
computer to sketch the graph of the “connected” function and check to see that
it looks like the one in the figure.

1 1 1 1
+ + + ≤4
(𝑎2 − 𝑎 + 1)2 (𝑏2 − 𝑏 + 1)2 (𝑐 2 − 𝑐 + 1)2 (𝑑 2 − 𝑑 + 1)2
