OPEN ENDED LAB PROBLEM

1. Course Code: CE-303

2. Course title: Civil Engineering Drawing and Graphics

3. Statement of Problem:

Prepare the topographic map of your home and its surroundings in a radius of 1KM
distance using AutoCAD software.

4. Open Ended Lab Attributes:

Students will need to have pretty enough knowledge of AutoCAD commands, its various
functions as well as basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Google earth/Google maps. The
OEL can be beneficial in incorporating remote sensing techniques in AutoCAD for its
real life physical application in the field of civil engineering.

5. Open Ended Lab Activities:

Students will need to collect data (coordinates) using handheld device, mobile phones or
satellite imagery from online sources and then process the data in required format that is
acceptable to AutoCAD.

6. Assessment Domains

The students will be assessed in Cognitive domains.

7. Tasks

The student is supposed to perform the following tasks:

 Locating their homes in Google maps and assessing the topography of the area

 Taking manual coordinates or taking Google imagery of the area for mapping its
topography.

 Processing the data for its input into AutoCAD software.

 Identifying the problems

 Submission of Open Ended Lab Report

8. Lab Report Format

The Lab report should include the following sections:

i. Problem Definition:
This is a statement of the problem to be investigated. It provides overall direction for
problem understanding. The student should rephrase the stated problem in his own words
that can display his understanding of the problem.

ii. Problem Identification:

This should identify different problems in water samples through various tests. The test
procedure must be clearly supported by steps involve in performing them.

iii. Propose Solution/Treatment method:

The student should suggest a suitable solution/ treatment method to the problem
identified. They should justify the proposed solution with reasons.

iv. Equipment to be used :

A list of all laboratory equipment used in the investigation.

A detailed and labelled diagram to illustrate the setup of the experiment.

v. Conclusions:

Discuss any questionable data or surprising results.

Explain the possible source of any error or questionable results.
