8C Angel of the North: Script

Hi, I’m Charlotte. I live in Newcastle, in the north
east of England. Newcastle is a great multicultural
city. There are lots of brilliant things to do and see,
and the city has got some fantastic museums and
art galleries.
Today, I’ve come to see one of the most famous
sculptures in Britain. But as you can see I haven’t
come to a gallery or a museum. I’ve just travelled
five miles from Newcastle to see this: the Angel of
the North!
The Angel of the North is the biggest sculpture in
Britain. It’s twenty metres high and its wings are
as big as a jet plane! The Angel is one of the most
popular works of art in the world. The sculpture’s
been here for ten years, and more than 90,000
people have seen it every day since it was built.
The Angel was created by a British artist called
Antony Gormley. Gormley always loved art, but after
university he didn’t know what he wanted to do, so
he went travelling. He was living in India when he
decided that he wanted to become a sculptor. He
returned to England and started to create amazing
sculptures.
In 1994, he won a very important art prize called
the Turner Prize, and he was asked to create a
dramatic sculpture for the north east of England.
Creating the Angel was a very big and expensive
project and Gormley wasn’t able to do it on his
own. He worked with lots of talented designers and
engineers to design and build the sculpture. The
Angel is made of steel and weighs over 200,000
kilograms. Finally, they moved the Angel here and
assembled it in a single day: 15 February 1998.
Here in the North East we’re very proud of the Angel
of the North. I’ve already seen the Angel many times
from the train and car, but I haven’t seen it up close
before. It’s a strange and unusual piece of art, but
it’s also quite moving. Personally, I don’t think
anybody has made a more impressive sculpture yet!
You should come and see it for yourself.
