What is Baroque Music?

 Western European Art Music


 Lasted from 1600-1750
 Was followed by Classical era
 Most diverse music period
Where does the word Baroque come
from?

 Portugese barocco
 Term used in 19th century
 Meant “oddly shaped pearl”
 Bach and Handel’s exaggerated music
 In Italian it meant “bizarre”
Characteristics of Baroque music

 Dramatic contrasts
 Basso continuo
 Energetic rhythms
 Instrumentation
 Repeated musical ideas bass lines
Early Baroque (1600-1640)

 Musicians found a way to express emotions


 Melody with chord accompaniment
 Extreme emotions (stressed)
 Opera
Middle Baroque (1640-1680)

 Major and minor scales


 Instrumental music was very popular
 Violin being the most popular
Late Baroque (1680-1750)
