Recall/Review Teacher:
of Previous EIM students, Can you recall the topic that you have learned in your
Lesson previous module? Yes, its all about Prepare Electrical and Hydraulic
Tools.
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
In our previous module you have learned that the electrical and hydraulic
tools are used to multiply manual work of humans. Tools can be
considered as extension of the human hand thereby increasing its speed,
power and accuracy.
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
When we say Hydraulic tools, these are high-powered tools that use
pressurized fluid to operate hydraulic machinery. The fluid moves through
hydraulic tubes and into the tool's actuator, where the pressure stored in
the fluid is transferred to the machine's moving parts.
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
Electrical power tools like:
Angle Grinder, hand drill, heat gun, hydraulic bender..

Pliers, screw driver, wire puller, EMT bender, drilling equipment,

Soldering tools, hammer, Measuring tools and instrument, sawing and
cutting tools, wire and cables are some samples of Electrical tools and
materials.
INSTRUMENTAL
You have also learned the Safe handling of Electrical Power and
Hydraulic tools so I believe you read all the general precautions stated in
your previous module to prevent hazards associated with the use of
power tools.

So these electrical power tools are extremely hazardous when used

improperly, so it must be fitted with guards and safety switches..
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
You also learned the 5s Methodology,

5S is a reference to a list of five Japanese words translated into English.

It is a method of organizing a workplace, especially shared workplaces
(like a shop flooror an office space, even in school).

The key targets of 5S are workplace morale and efficiency. The assertion
of 5S is, that time must not be wasted.
The 5S's stands for:
SEIRI: SORT (CLEAN UP) This is the first in the 5S program:
"Sorting" means to sort everything in each work area. Keep only what is
necessary. Put in a separate storage area materials/tools that are not
frequently used and discard the ones that are no longer functional.

SEITON: SET IN ORDER (ORGANIZE)

This is the second step in the Five S program: Step two is to organize, to
arrange or organize everything. Commonly used tools should be readily
available. Storage areas, cabinets and shelves should be properly
labeled.

SEISŌ: SWEEP (REGULAR CLEANING)

Step Three: requires you to do regular cleaning. Once you have
everything from each individual work area up to your entire facility sorted
(cleaned up) and organized, you need to keep it that condition.

SEIKETSU: STANDARDIZE (SIMPLIFY)

Step Four: is to simplify and standardize our actions so that it will be a
habit in our routine.

SHITSUKE: SUSTAIN
Step Five: The final step is to continue training and maintaining the
standards.

Often in the west, alternative terms are used for the five S. These are "Sort,
Straighten, Shine, Systemize and Sustain". "Standardize" is used as an
alternative for "Systemize". Sometimes "Safety" is included as 6th S
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
So I hope you remember all those things.
Teacher:
Lesson Alright! G9 EIM learners, let us start now to our lesson in quarter 2,
Proper module 1 entitled: Select the Wiring Devices Used for Floor and Ground

B. Select a known industry manufacturer
C. Select wiring devices according to the job requirement
D. Always ask for manufacturer’s manual

5. Which of the following is used to indicate that the device is

economically priced
or designed for light-duty applications?
A. Eeconomy
B. intermediate or residential
C. competitive
D. All of the above
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
Ok let us now reveal the answer: for the number 1, its letter C, 2)A, 3)B,
4)C.5)D
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
How was your answers? Do you get at least half of the total items or you
got perfect? If not, then it’s fine for it is just only a measurement of what
you know about the topic.
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher;
Okay students at this point, lets discuss our topic on Select the wiring
devices used for floor and Ground Fault current interrupter? But let ask
you this question, WHY PROPER SELECTION OF WIRING DEVICES
ARE IMPORTANT?

Answer: wiring devices is the finishing touch and a chance to test all
branch circuits for proper operation…high resistance faults from poor wire
connections in switch, light, and recepatacles boxes are the most likely
areas for fire hazards, so proper wiring skill and techniques at this stage
are important.
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher;
Ok pls open your module on page 4, I believe some of you have already
your 2nd quarter module in EIM.

So we have here the PEC or Philippine Electrical Code provision in

installing electrical boxes.
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
Electrical boxes primary function is to house electrical connections.
Those connections might be to a switch, a receptacle, the leads of a light
fixture, or other sets of wire.
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
Electrical codes requires that all wire conections or cable splices be
inside an approved metal or plastic box. And every box must be
accessible – you cannot burry inside a wall. These protects your home
from the danger of fire and make it easier to inspect and upgrade your
wiring in the future
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
Boxes for switches and receptacles serve as workhorses in any electrical
installation.

So you have there the table in Choosing the correct electrical box size
(you may refer to module 4 to 5)
INSTRUMENTAL
Now lets discuss the Types of Electrical Box (refer to page 7 to 10)
1. Wall boxes
2. Plastic box
3. Gem box
4. Ceiling box
5. Weatherproof box
6. Wall plates

INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
a. So those are the types of electrical box

Now lets move on to Types of Wiring Devices

INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
Wiring devices are defined as single discrete units of electrical distribution
systems which are intended to carry but not utilize electric energy. Wiring
devices are electrical devices used to control and to provide connection
points for low voltage outlets, lighting systems and appliances (e.g., wall
switches and receptacles).
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
The Philippine Electrical Code (PEC) and National Electrical Code (NEC)
defines device as a unit of an electrical system that is intended to carry or
control
but not utilize electric energy. This covers a wide assortment of system
components that include, but not limited to the following:
1. Switches
2. Relays
3. Contactors
4. Receptacles
5. Conductors
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
1. Switches - These are electrical component that can disconnect
or connect the conducting path in an electrical circuit, interrupting
the electric current or diverting it from one conductor to another.
Switches are made in many different configurations; they may
have multiple sets of contacts controlled by the same knob or
actuator, and the contacts may operate simultaneously,
sequentially, or alternately. A switch may be operated manually,
for example, a light switch or a keyboard button, or may function
as a sensing element to sense the position of a machine part,
liquid level, pressure, or temperature, such as a thermostat
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
2. Relays - are switching devices used in any control circuit for
checking a condition or multiplying the number of contacts
available. A relay consists of at least two contacts and an
excitation coil. These contacts may be normally open or normally
closed.
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
3. A Contactor is used for switching of motors, capacitors, lights
etc, that drains very high current. It has at least a single pair of
three-phase input and output contacts. It would be normally open.
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
4. Conductors - are materials that permit electrons to flow freely
from particle to particle. An object made of a conducting material
will permit charge to be transferred across the entire surface of
the object.
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
So those are the type of wiring devices. Now lets move on to..
How to select wiring devices?
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:

So here are the steps or procedures in selecting wiring devices:

1. Select a known industry manufacturer.
2. Look for a multi- year product warranty.
3. Make sure that there is an easy and clear way to contact the
manufacturers support.
4. Check for a connected equipment damage warranty.
5. Always ask for manufacturer’s manual
6. Select wiring devices which are well-made and durable.
7. Select materials that easy to use and install.
8. Select wiring devices according to the job requirements
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher:
These are the steps or procedures in selecting wiring devices.

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) information

A GFCI is an automatic device that offers personal protection against

lethal electrical shock or electrocution.

A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) can help prevent electrocution. If

a person’s body starts to receive a shock, the GFCI senses this and cuts
off the power before he/she can get injured. GFCIs are generally installed
where electrical circuits may accidentally come into contact with water.
They are most often found in kitchens, bath and laundry rooms, or even
out-of-doors or in the garage where electric power tools might be used.
INSTRUMENTAL
teacher
What is a Ground Fault?
According to the National Electrical Code, a “ground fault” is a conducting
connection (whether intentional or accidental) between any electric
conductor and any conducting material that is grounded or that may
become grounded. Electricity always wants to find a path to the ground.
In a ground fault, electricity has found a path to ground, but it is a path the
electricity was never intended to be on, such as through a person’s body.

Because of this potential for shock, GFCI protection is used to protect

human life.
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher
How does a GFCI work?
 Normally, electricity flows from hot to neutral in the outlet. The GFCI
works by measuring the current leaving the hot side of the power
source and comparing it to the current returning to the neutral side.
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher
 The GFCI detects imbalance in the current flowing from hot to neutral,
imbalance in the current flowing from hot to neutral and quickly cuts off
electricity, thus reducing the risk of electrical shock
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher
 The GFCI will “sense” the difference in the amount of electricity
flowing into the circuit to that flowing out, even in amounts of current
as small as 4 or 5 milliamps. The GFCI reacts quickly (less than one-
tenth of a second) to trip or shut off the circuit.
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher
Where GFCIs should be used?
It is recommended that GFCIs be installed in areas where appliances and
power tools are used in close proximity to water. Tap water or wet objects
are able to conduct electricity very easily and can connect your body to a
ground potential, thus increasing your chances of receiving a shock from
a ground fault.
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher
The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires GFCIs to be installed at
following spots at home and outside such as:
✓ Kitchens Receptacles
✓ Bathrooms Receptacles
✓ Wet bars Sinks
✓ Laundry rooms
✓ Utility sinks
✓ Garages Receptacle
✓ Crawl Spaces
✓ Unfinished basements
✓ Laundry Receptacles
✓ Pool, spa, and hot-tub Receptacles
INSTRUMENTAL
Teacher
Type of Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)

Three types of GFCIs are commonly used in homes – the GFCI outlet,
the GFI circuit breaker and the portable GFCI. All of these GFCIs perform
the same function but each has different applications and limitations.
1. GFCI Outlet / Receptacle type GFCI
2. GFCI Circuit Breaker
3. Temporary or Portable GFCI
