Lesson
The Filipino Value System and its
6 Influence on Business Practices
After going through this module, you are expected to infer how Filipino value system
influence business practices.

The Filipino value system or Filipino values refer to the set of value system that a
majority of the Filipino have historically held important in our lives. Filipino values are those
given emphasis in culture and tradition of the Filipinos. They shape character, or ugaling
Pilipino.
Some of the Filipino values include:
1. Utang na loob. The Filipino is beholden to anyone who did him good or helped him in an
hour of need. Utang na loob is a value which moves to recognize, respect, promote, and at
times defend the basic dignity of each person. It meant as the direct exchange of goods and
favors (“Utang na loob,”2016).
Utang na loob may be good or bad for business depending on a lot of considerations,
but it definitely affects the way business is conducted especially when the business person is
confronted with ethical issues.
2. Suki System. “Suki” is a Filipino term which means “loyal costumer.”
According to Ronald (1981), “In the commercial context, suki relationships (market-
exchange relationships) may develop between two people who agree to become regular
costumer and supplier. In the market place, Filipinos will regularly buy from certain suppliers
who will give them, in return, reduced prices, good quality, and often, credit.”
Customer satisfaction is essential to the survival of any business, small scale or large
scale; and retailers know that satisfied customers are loyal customers. Consequently,
retailers develop strategies to build relationships that result in customers returning to make
more purchases. By responding to customer’s needs, business owners endeavor to meet or
exceed customer expectations for their product or service. This increases the likelihood of
gaining sukis. (“Suki,”2016)
3. Padrino System (Palakasan, Patronage). In Filipino and politics, Padrino system or
patronage is the value system where one gains favor, promotion or political appointment
through family affiliation (nepotism) or friendship (cronyism), as opposed to one’s merit.
In business:
Nepotism is more common in family-run companies, nonprofits, and smaller firms. It is the
practice of hiring family members regardless of their qualifications. Nepotism comes when
the employee is not qualified to perform the job. It gives an advantage to the relative/family
applicant over the other applicants.
Cronyism is the other side of nepotism, the practice of partiality in awarding jobs and other
advantages to friends or trusted colleagues. It exists when the appointer and the beneficiary
(such as an appointee) are in social or business contact.
4. Bahala na. The word Bahala is actually derivative of the word Bathala, which refers
means God. It is a Filipino version of fatalism that is, they throw everything in the lap of God.
“Bahala na” is not a surrender to fate, but a surrender to God’s will, considering the
fact that Filipinos are very religious.
However, others use the Bahala na concept to mean the person’s state of
helplessness and resignation of one’s fate. Sometimes it is used to refer to the person’s
ignorance or laziness to do anything at all.
5. Mañana Habit. Mañana Habit is one of the most negative traits of some Filipinos. It comes
from the Spanish word “Mañana” which literally means “tomorrow”. Mañana Habit refers to
procrastinate way of doing things or simply means finding a way to delay a work to be done.
In business, “Mañana habit” rerults to:

• Reduced efficiency – Filipinos become lazier and less productive in work.

• Damaged reputation – If it gets to the point where the effects of procrastination
affects what and when you deliver to customers you are obviously in trouble and it
may cause a reputation for tardiness.
• Missed opportunities – If you’re on top of your workload you’ll also be a much better
position to take advantage of new opportunities.
