Exercises 3

1. Name and define the two areas of statistics.

First areas was descripted statistics is a summary that quantitatively describes or
summarizes features from a collection of information while the second areas was
inferential statistics is you take data from the sample and make generalizations about of
it.

2. In each of these statements, tell whether descriptive or inferential statistics have been
used.
Inferential a. In the year 2030, 100 million Filipinos will be enrolled in
an DepEd and CHED.
Descriptive b. Nine out of ten on-the-job fatalities are men
Descriptive c. Expenditures for the cable industry were $5.66 billion in
1996.
Descriptive d. The median household income for people aged 25–34 is
Php35,888.
Inferential e. Allergy therapy makes bees go away
Inferential f. Drinking decaffeinated coffee can raise cholesterol levels by 7%.
Descriptive g. The national average annual medicine expenditure per person is
Php. 50,000.00.
Inferential h. Experts say that mortgage rates may soon hit bottom

1. Classify each variable as qualitative or quantitative.

Quantitative a. Number of bicycles sold in 1 year by a large sporting
goods store.
Qualitative b. Colors of baseball caps in a store.
Quantitative c. Times it takes to cut a lawn.
Quantitative d. Capacity in cubic feet of six truck beds.
Qualitative e. Classification of children in a day care center (infant,
toddler, preschool).
Quantitative f. Weights of fish caught in Lake Sebu.
Qualitative g. Marital status of faculty members in a large university.

2. Classify each variable as discrete or continuous.

Discrete a. Number of doughnuts sold each day by Donut House.
Continuous b. Water temperatures of six swimming pools in Pittsburgh
on a given day.
Continuous c. Weights of cats in a pet shelter.
Continuous d. Lifetime (in hours) of 12 flashlight batteries.
Discrete e. Number of cheeseburgers sold each day by a hamburger
stand on a college campus.

Exercises 5

1. Name and define the four level of measurement.

Thare are four level of measurement. First is the Nominal Level is a measurement or
scale of measure is classification that describe the nature of information within the
values assigned to variables . second its soppurt ranking and ordering of the data
without actually establishing the degree of variation beteween them called Ordinal
Level. Third is Interval level the nominal scale and ordinal scale. And lastly, is the ratio
level which is quanitative in nature.

2. Classify each as nominal-level, ordinal-level, interval level, or ratio-level

measurement.
Ration a. Pages in the city of Manila telephone book.
Ordinal b. Rankings of tennis players.
Ratio c. Weights of air conditioners.
Interval d. Temperatures inside 10 refrigerators.
Ratio e. Salaries of the top five CEOs in the Philippines.
Ordinal f. Ratings of eight local plays (poor, fair, good, excellent).
Ratio g. Times required for mechanics to do a tune-up.
Ratio h. Ages of students in a classroom.
Nominal i. Marital status of patients in a physician’s office.
Ratio j. Horsepower of tractor engines.
Exercises 6
1. Name and define the four basic sampling methods.
a.Random Sampling is a part of the sampling technique in which each sample has
equal probability of being chosen. Random is the simplest forms collecting data from the
total population.
b. Systematic samoling is a statistical method that researcher use to zero down on the
desired population they want to research. It also defined as a probability sampling
method where the researcher choses the elements from target population by selecting a
randpm starting point and selects sample member after a fixed “sampling interval”.
c. Stratified sampling is a type of sampling method in which the total population is
divided into smaller groups or strata to complete the sampling process.
d. Cluster sampling is a probability sampling technique where researcher divide the
population into multiple groups (clusters) for research.

2. Identify each sample as random, systematic, stratified, or cluster.

Cluster a. In a large school district, all teachers from two buildings are interviewed
to determine whether they believe the students have less homework to do now than in
previous years.
Systematic b. Every seventh customer entering a shopping mall is asked to select her
or his favorite store.
Random c. Nursing supervisors are selected using random numbers to determine
annual salaries.
Systematic d. Every 100th hamburger manufactured is checked to determine its fat
content.
Stratified e. Mail carriers of a large city are divided into four groups according to gender
(male or female) and according to whether they walk or ride on their routes. Then 10 are
selected from each group and interviewed to determine whether they have been bitten
by a dog in the last year.
Exercises 7.

1. Identify each study as being either observational or experimental.

Experimental a. Subjects were randomly assigned to two groups, and one group
was given an herb and the other group a placebo. After 6 months, the
numbers of respiratory tract infections each group had were compared.
Observational b. A researcher stood at a busy intersection to see if the color
of the automobile that a person drives is related to running red lights.
Observational c. A researcher finds that people who are more hostile have higher
total cholesterol levels than those who are less hostile.
Experimental d. Subjects are randomly assigned to four groups. Each group is
placed on one of four special diets—a low-fat diet, a high-fish diet, a
combination of low-fat diet and high-fish diet, and a regular diet.
After 6 months, the blood pressures of the groups are compared to
see if diet has any effect on blood pressure.

2. Choose atleast 2 items in # 1 and dentify the independent variable(s) and the
dependent variable for each of the studies.
Indepemdent Variable a. Subjects were randomly assigned to two groups, and one
group was given an herb and the other group a placebo. After 6 months, the
numbers of respiratory tract infections each group had were compared.
Indepemdent Variable b. A researcher stood at a busy intersection to see if the
color of the automobile that a person drives is related to running red lights.
Exercises 8. Answer the following questions.

1. In you own point of view, how can statistics be used and misused. Cite examples
to support your answer.
Statistics ae to be able to effectively conduct research, to be able to read and
evaluate journal articles, to further develop critical thinking and analytical skills,
to act a an informed consumer, and to know when you need to hire outside
statistical help. The statistics used in many ways like simple collecting data of
your business, How much the profit of the whole day selling. It can also be
misused through collecting data and its bring you to wrong computation. Or may

own way.
