Educ 204 - THE TEACHER AND THE COMMUNITY, SCHOOL
CULTURE AND ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP

SELF-ASSESSMENT TEST

After reading the Module/Learning Material:

1. In your own understanding, define in not more than 3 sentences the basic concepts
about community and education. (25 pts)
The community first develops a knowledge that gives enlightenment to each
individual. A person acquires a knowledge based on what he sees around and
that is where education enters’ where a person acquires knowledge as he steps
through trials. Community helps in increasing attendance and enrollment of the
students in school by motivating its members. It can help learning activities work
in a mutually supportive way, responding to the total learning needs of the
community. By benefiting students, families, teachers, and other stakeholders,
those individuals develop the skills and stability to help others, thereby
perpetuating an ongoing process of community development.

2. Make an appropriate graphic organizer to describe how philosophical and sociological

theories are manifested in the practical classroom situation in response to the
community contexts. (50 pts)

3. Explain how education was shaped by the philosophical and sociological perspectives of
the time, focusing on how education responds to the needs of the society and
community. (50 pts)

Perspectives are bundles of beliefs, a mindset that we each embrace determining how

we see one another, our experiences, and possibilities or lack thereof. In the Philosophical
theories we learned different philosophies that contribute in the society and community. This
philosophical perspective frees us to approach our future with both anticipation and content,
eagerness without expectation. Education with philosophy has a close relationship because
philosophy is a view of life that leads to the goal of education.
Philosophy thus makes an important contribution to our understanding of society.
Philosophy plays a significant role in solving global problems. Its main function is to form a world
view, also have an indirect influence on the development of practical solutions. Philosophy helps
in the development of a healthy mind in a person. It helps in the cultivation of rational, reflective
and critical mind. Thus, Philosophy is important to study that these philosophies have many
contributed in our community.
In sociological perspective emphasizes that our social backgrounds influence our
attitudes, behaviors, and life chances. Also, it is mostly concerned with the public schooling
systems of modern industrial societies, including the expansion of higher, further, adult, and
continuing education. It is all that goes on in the society which involves teaching and learning
whether intended or unintended to make the child a functional member of that society.
Sociologists study social events, interactions, and patterns, and they develop a theory in
an attempt to explain why things work as they do. Social inequality is also perpetuated through
the widespread use of standardized tests. Critics say these tests continue to be culturally
biased, as they include questions whose answers are most likely to be known by white, middle-
class students, whose backgrounds have afforded them various experiences that help them
answer the questions.
4. Make a Simple document analysis of the existing documents, reports, primers on the
Enhanced Basic Education Curriculum (K to 12 Curriculum). The focus of the analysis
would be the identification of the philosophical and sociological contributors to the
change in curriculum. (100 pts)

The K to 12 Program; DepEd eyes review of learning competencies in K-12 program

by Meg Adonis
(newspaper article)

I. Introduction

K to 12 Program is an education system under the Department of Education that

aims to enhance learners’ basic skills, produce more competent citizens and prepare
graduates for lifelong learning and employment. “K” stands for Kindergarten and “12” refers
to succeeding 12 years of basic education ( 6 years of elementary of education, 4 years of
Junior High School and 2 years of Senior High School). In the old system students are lack
mastery of basic competencies due to a congested ten-year basic education curriculum. Old
education system offers a broad curriculum that does not include enough practical
applications. In this new system of education the K to 12 program offers a decongested 12-
year program that gives students sufficient time to master skills and absorb basic
competencies.
Students of this new system will graduate at the age of 18 and will be ready for
employment, entrepreneurship, middle level skills development and higher education upon
graduation. The K to 12 Program accelerates mutual recognition of Filipino graduates and
professionals in other countries. Districts that are pursuing competency-based systems
share a belief that the current purpose of K-12 education is to facilitate a process through
which all students’ graduate high school with the academic and lifelong learning skills to be
leaders in their communities. Students have insufficient mastery of basic competencies due
to congested curriculum. Twelve year curriculum is being delivered in 10 years only. The
inadequacy of instructional time is reflected in ten student's insufficient mastery of basic
competencies.
II. Document to be analyzed

It is documented by Meg Adonis the reporter of Philippines Daily Inquirer. It is

documented has no marks or any stamps. It is from Manila, Philippines it releases on June
22, 2021. It is all about the review of learning competencies dealing with the K to 12
programs. The author write it in order to inform those students and parents to not lose hope
that even though we have this pandemic there’s no hinder to grow knowledge, we continue
to learn so that we can achieve the goals or career in the future. The document is important
to inform students the K to 12 programs will continue provide their learning materials that
they needed and provide the best quality of education to their careers.

III. Analysis

A news article titled: “DepEd eyes review of learning competencies in K-12 program”
by Meg Adonis the reporter of Philippine Daily Inquirer. The Department of Education
(DepEd) on Monday announced that it was eyeing a gradual review of the country’s
“congested” learning competencies in the K-12 curriculum in a bid to equip learners with the
necessary skills for future employment. The “2022 version” of the current basic education
curriculum may be released by the end of 2021 and applied next year, said Diosdado San
Antonio, education undersecretary for curriculum and instruction.

The DepEd recognized that the current K-12 curriculum was among its major
concerns in the agency’s implementation of the blended learning delivery modality in school
year 2020-2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.‘Areas for improvement’. According to San
Antonio, the DepEd is now processing curriculum-shaping documents that will allow the
agency to refine what have been found as “areas for improvement” in its curriculum review
initiative. The current structure of basic education demands the agency to decongest the
curriculum and relieve students of overwhelming requirements in all of their subjects, he
said.

In March, the DepEd said it had already reduced the more than 15,000 learning
competencies in the so-called traditional learning curriculum to less than 10 per quarter on
every grade level.“We have committed to Education Secretary Leonor Briones that the
shape of the enhanced version, the 2022 version of the K-12 curriculum, will be ready
before the end of this year. We will be having consultations with appropriate bodies so that
the voices of everybody will be heard,” San Antonio said. The DepEd’s curriculum and
instruction office will first review the curriculum in Kindergarten and Grades 1 to 3, San
Antonio said.

Last month, the Philippine Business for Education urged the DepEd to ensure the
employability of K-12 students and stressed that this year’s graduates would be entering “a
much more uncertain market due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”Briones acknowledged this
uncertainty and clarified that the agency was focusing on developing the critical thinking and
analysis skills of K-12 students to better equip them for future employment.

IV. Conclusion

The program aims to uplift the quality of education in the Philippines in order for
graduates to be easily employed. The program also aims to meet the standards required
for professionals who would want to work abroad. Most importantly, the system aims to
fully enhance and develop the students in order for them to be well-prepared especially in
emotional and cognitive aspects. If the government could allot a bigger budget to
educational needs, then we could be one-step ahead towards the success of the K-12
program. This is very important since parents play a major role in providing the child's
school allowances, supplies, and fees for other school projects and activities. Add to that
the support of parents towards their children in terms of guidance and teaching. The
DepEd seems all set to add two more years to the country’s 10 year basic education
curriculum. This is a very tough issue to crack.
