1. Museo De Catanduanes – Cultural Museum

It is the island's principal museum, built up by the Provincial Tourism Office of


Catanduanes which caters the province's historical, cultural, and social legacy.

2. Abaca Festival – Festive Event

The festival is cognizance of the importance of abaca fiber or Manila hemp industry in the
local economy and the need to showcase its versatility as a major source of livelihood
and craft material which has brought Catanduanes fame and fortune.

3. Burac Festival – Festive Event

Burac Festival is the feast day of Immaculate Conception (Town Fiesta) A flourishing
municipality, Virac is believed to have its name originated from “Burac”, a local term for a
flower.

4. Oco Kantil Resort – Cultural Landscapes

A fresh and green water surrounded by many coconut tree found in Oco, Viga.

5. Luyang Cave Park – Natural Sacred Sites

The cave below the San Andres - Virac Highway reveals interesting episode in the history
of this town. The historic cave served as a hiding place for locals during the Moro Raid in the
early years of the 18th century

6. Bato Church – Cultural Heritage Sites

The rustic town of Bato serves as the de facto heritage center of the province with its
Spanish-era religious sites: a picturesque Catholic church, circa 1883, made up of mortar and

coral stones. The church is of interest not only as an example of mid-colonization Filipino-Spanish
architecture, but as a historical landmark.

7. Kagharong – Oral Traditions

A folk-religious related activity depicting a Christmas tradition. The activity centers on the
re-enactment of the plight of St. Joseph and Virgin Mary, in their search for a place to stay
overnight in the town of Bethlehem.

8. Abaca Fibers (Bag) – Handicarfts

The fibers of abaca are meticulously woven into fashionable bags that are definitely good
for almost all occasions. It has an excellent quality, made out of a unique raw material
and are literally handmade.

9. Mutya nin Virac – Music and Song

The time of waiting came to an end when in 1982 the group with new memberships
(Nelson, Jerry, Nonong, and Zaldy Bautista) has been formally organized. This time the group
was able to compose another original song which they titled "Mutya ning Virac", in Sampaloc,

Manila. Since then, the group busied themselves in composing new original songs (Virac worded
and also in mainland bicol lyrics).

10. Bato River – Cultural Landscapes

The main island of Catanduanes is divided into 18 river basins. Bato River is the biggest and
longest, following a course that gently meanders from the interiors of the municipalities of
Caramoran and Gigmoto and along the entire length of the municipality of San Miguel then
widens perceptibly as it approaches the municipality of Bato before draining into Cabugao Bay.
Bato River separates the municipality of Bato into two, the East and the West.

11. Latik- Culinary Traditions

This famous kakanin is a sticky rice treat made with glutinous rice, coconut milk, and
additional malunggay juice to enhance the flavor and color.

12. Camoteng Kahoy in caramelized brown sugar – Culinary Traditions

Often called as Balanghoy, this Camoteng Kahoy delicacy is no stranger in Catanduanes.


It’s a simple local dessert usually made with cassava, brown sugar and vanilla extract
plus water.

13. Batalay Mangrove Eco- Park – Cultural Lanscapes

A mangrove is a type of forest growing along tidal mudflats and along shallow coastal areas
extending inland along rivers, streams and their tributaries where the water is generally brackish.

14. St. James the Greater Parish Church – Cultural Heritage Sites

This church, in 1720-25 has never been substantially rebuilt. It succumbed to the
earthquake of January 11, 1928 its east wall was ripped beyond repair and ugly cracks were
opened in several places.

15. Balisungsong – Culinary Traditions

If you’re into the usual suman, you may certainly like this Balisungsong too! A
Bicolano’s pride, this delicacy is made up of ground rice; can be from ordinary or sticky
rice, coconut milk, sugar and lastly, coconut.

1. Is heritage about the past or the present? Why?
Heritage is not history, it is a part of the past that survived in different difficulties that
happened from so many years, because Heritage show us a clue how and what happened in
the past.
2. How does heritage form the basis for our sense of collective identity?
It form the basis for our sense of collective identity by collecting memories from the past,
study what happened from past years. The past create our sense how we can proceed in
another period of time and how we will care the heritage which we did not first see in the
first place.
3. Can heritage transcend local meaning to acquire universal value?
4. How do societies use heritage to remember (and forget) the events of the past?
Societies use heritage to remember the events of the past through searching and look for
some evidences to recognize what happened in the past years that heritage have the
memories and experience from the past years. And to forget some events in the past
which heritage overcome some difficulties.
5. How do authority and power play out through heritage?
The authority has the power which has an entity and the ability to control, this will help
the heritage to protect and preserve from unfortunate event.
6. How is the performance of heritage a form of social action?
The performance of heritage a form of social action is has been reinforced deeply,
because it is a way which people have strongly connection to each other. It may even
have differ from person to person.
7. How do heritage decisions affect people’s lives?
It affect people’s lives to examine the previous life and develop our history and traditions
and awareness about ourselves. It help us to understand what we are. However, it reflect
us to shape our values and aspirations.
8. And how might heritage choices bring local people into conflict with the state?
It bring the local people into conflict with the state which conflict arise in human
relationships. By understanding the role of conflict in heritage will lead to peace. We did not know
that we are the threats in heritage? Because of war and religious conflict we totally destroy the
heritage.
9. As a future Culture and Arts educator, what do you think are your roles in the preservation of
culture and arts in our country?
As a future Culture and Arts educator, the roles in the preservation of culture and arts in
our country is to have a broad knowledge of our culture, keep it enriched and love our
own culture that identified us. And to keep preserve our culture we can share it to other
that are not familiar with our origins.

10. Develop your own definition of culture and cultural heritage.


Culture is a people’s belief that enhances the quality of our life and it provides
preservation of our value in everyday life. Cultural Heritage is part of our past that
strongly survived from the past and trace the history.
