IV. READING
You can find endless lists of qualities that people need to be good leaders and, to a large
extent, they all agree that someone who is confident, well-motivated, decisive, honest and
hard-working has the basic qualities of a good leader.
When people are questioned about their bosses, they may come up with a variety of
descriptions from ‘she’s very organised’ to ‘he gets angry if we don’t meet our deadlines’.
Some people like what they consider to be strong leaders who tell them what to do, while
others respond to a softer approach and prefer their managers to also be their mentors.
Perhaps one of the most important qualities of a leader is to be able to sense what kind of
approach to take with individual staff members. The ability to recognise what each
member of staff responds to best means that a leader will know how to motivate them. Being
flexible and adaptable to both staff and situations are excellent qualities for today’s modern
business leader.
Leaders have to inspire their teams, setting good examples in the process. In order to do
this they need to have a clear vision of where they and the company are going. If leaders
lack this vision, then the business is likely to find itself in a very weak position.
Someone I once worked with absolutely hated his boss. She was moody and unpredictable
and he was never sure whether she was going to be angry or happy with him. She pretended to
be very friendly towards him but then she would suddenly criticise him harshly for some
minor error, an error which had usually been caused because she had given him the wrong
instructions or information. In fact, my friend could not stand her unpredictability and had to
leave the company because he was suffering from stress. After listening to his complaints
about her, I realised that the reason why I enjoy working with my manager is because I know
exactly how he is going to behave. He always thinks first before speaking and is quick to
praise me if I do something well and gives constructive criticism if I have not done something
as well as I could. I feel that we are part of the same team and I really appreciate how
supportive he is.
Companies can send staff on leadership training courses, but I believe that there are some
things which cannot be taught. First and foremost, in my view, it is an ability to read other
people and to select the best way to communicate with them. Secondly, it is the ability to see
the whole picture and then break it down into logical sensible tasks that can be delegated to
the right staff. And finally, I think that there are two qualities which make a boss great to
work with: likeability and predictability.
1 The basic qualities of leadership
a are accepted by the majority of people.
b are greatly appreciated by everyone.
c give people a lot of confidence.
2 In paragraph two we learn that people
a want bosses to be angry and are strong.
b like managers who often talk to them.
c have different views about good leaders.
3 A key quality that leaders need is to be able to
a recognise everyone’s abilities in the team.
b change their communication style for different people.
c train staff to be more responsive to change.
4 Having a clear vision of company objectives
a improves the company processes.
b helps leaders get the best out of their staff.
c shows how good a leader someone is.
5 One boss was hated by her staff because
a she never praised them.
b she liked to criticise everyone.
c her behaviour was so changeable.
6 The writer enjoys working with her manager because he
a is careful how he speaks to his team.
b appreciates how difficult the work can be.
c never criticises the work done by his team.
7 In the writer’s opinion a good boss
a is pleasant and behaves consistently.
b can learn a lot from training courses.
c does not have to be a logical thinker.
