ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

Integrity is globally defined as “The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles

may it be personal, professional or artistic.”

Integrity is a moral value which is taught to humans from the earliest of their age as a basic

standard of civilized human. In fact, it means being wise enough to choose between what is

wrong and what is right. There is no specific place where one can learn integrity except the

school and family which are two of the most important places for a person to learn. Every

teacher and parent teach the best values to their children and these values include honesty,

respect, peace, responsibility, sincerity, unity and truthfulness, these values are necessity and

considered as a foundation of personality development as it effects the way a person acts and

what a person becomes for the society

What will he make of himself and what role will he play in his community whether it is good or

bad, it all depends on his personality and integrity development. To be a person of integrity is

not to be perfect; it is to be genuine. Even the smallest activities of staying honest while

nobody is watching are acts of integrity.

Integrity is a reflection of your character and your character plays a role wherever you stay. You

being a part of society directly influence everyone around you; one may play a good or a bad

role in their place, it affects everyone surrounding them. Integrity is important and needs to be

maintained at every place every time.

It’s important in building unity and healthy relations with your parents, teachers, colleagues and

elders. Integrity frees a person of guilt because someone who is loyal and honest will never

avoid accepting their mistakes. . Integrity allows people to have a calm and happy life because

they don't have to lie to other people in order to keep the truth from being exposed. Just

because that person's character is good, a person with integrity is always valued in society.

Integrity in fact, enhances a person's personality. It also contributes to a higher quality of life. It

makes one a trustworthy and dependable person. Integrity instills respect, standards, and

purpose, as well as values that promote modesty and honesty in daily life. The world would be a

chaos if there was no integrity.

As a student I am expected to be honest and respectful towards my teachers and behave

modest with my mates, making sure I cause no one any harm and be grateful for them. To make

this happen, the best thing I can do is to be extremely well informed. Academic integrity entails

not only not cheating, but also being accountable for the actions we used in our work. We may

only use someone else's idea or work if we give them proper credit. We don't want to steal

someone else's hard work in the same way that we wouldn't want it done to us. I recall once

when we were in high school, we were writing an essay about a story we had just finished

reading. To support our writing, we were allowed to include in-text citations. I overlooked my

open quote mark since I was so nervous about not copying accurately from the book. My

teacher then told me that a small error could have been considered plagiarism. She was aware

that I was attempting to cite it, but I had to exercise extreme caution.

The values of authenticity, originality, and integrity are very important to me in my academic as

well as general life. I intend to be truthful to my school, my employer and myself. I want to

ensure that they can trust me as a student and, hopefully, as a professional in the future.

Because, the manner in which we study and perform our duties reflects the type of person we

are and the type of professional we would be. I want to have a fun learning experience while

also learning about my field. I want to make sure I'm not claiming someone else's work as my

own, and if I do, I want to properly credit them. There are numerous resources available to

ensure that I am citing correctly.

The academic integrity issues that brought me to this point include not being well aware of

College’s Academic Integrity Policy and too much academic burden as a new student. As in this

case, I asked a friend to send me the password for the quiz that was being conducted online in

BrightSpace within the lab. One of the reasons was that I had a midterm exam for another

course in the next class, so in order to prepare for that I missed the lab. But when I got to know

about the quiz being conducted in the lab through a friend, I asked him to share the password

for the quiz so I could complete the quiz remotely without being present in the lab which I now

think was totally wrong. It was because, being a new student I was not well aware of the

college’s academic integrity policy which states that “Students must be present in the lab to do

the quizzes under supervision and to ensure that they are completing the assessment by

themselves.” Also because, for most of the other courses the teachers allow the students to

complete the quizzes outside the classroom or lab. In the end, I think this incident happened

because of my mistake and I accept the sanctions applied on me. In the future I will try my best

to be honest towards my college and my studies. I will also ensure that I am fully aware of the

college’s academic integrity policy so an incident like this can be avoided in future.
