SOCIOLOGY DEPARTMENT
A brief report on the work done by the social team during the second week of September 2021
1. Sensitization and awareness training for project personnel
There was one training session conducted during the week and this covered the topic shown
below;
a) HIV/AIDS awareness training
The awareness was done as part of induction training that was organized by the Sociologist on
9th September 2021. The training was focused on four key aspects of HIV/AIDS in which the
trainees were able to learn different key means of transmission of the HIV virus, impacts, and
ways of reducing transmission, precautions, and programmes in place to prevent the spread of
HIV/AIDS among project staff, their families and community within project areas. A few
aspects on gender were also sighted in the discussion
b) Covid-19 prevention
Workers were informed more of the effect of Covid-19 and trained on the preventive measures which
include wearing their masks, keeping at list two meters away from each other (social
distancing),washing hands frequently.
They were advised to avoid touching their eyes, mouth, and nose as a way of preventing the spread
of Covid-19.
c) Worker’s welfare
Workers were informed of the worker’s Code of conduct which will contain the rules and regulations
of the company and the penalty in case of any violation of these rules. They were assured of being
given masks and reminded of the need to follow instructions as given by their bosses both Ugandan
and Chinese.

2. Engagement meeting
The social team and the Human Resource Officer held a meeting with the Resident City
Commissioner of Gulu city council on Wednesday 8th September 2021. The meeting was a
cutesy call on the formal introduction of the project and its objectives. (Attached are pictorial
evidences named Appendix II)
3. Site inspection
Various inspections were carried out at the proposed borrow areas in Lapta Village and Rom Cell,
Koro Sub-County site both located in Gulu City Council. The purpose of the inspection was to assess
the possible impacts of the proposed project activities in the area on the environmental, social-
economic, cultural setting or livelihoods of the inhabitants or surrounding community and develop a
plan to mitigate the adverse impacts of the activities on the population. During the inspection the
following were noticed as described in the terms of reference given:
 There were some settlements near the site.
 There was some small-scale agriculture carried out which included growing of food crops like
rice, G.nuts, and sweet potatoes and rearing of cows, Goats and some poultry.
 Other activities included brick laying, and small businesses that were found in the nearby
trading center in Lapta.

4. Finalizing Supplementary Plans and submission for review

The team also finalized with the preparation of the Stakeholder’s Engagement plan which as
submitted for review.
5. Office duties
The social team also performed a number of office errands that included:-
a) Responding to correspondences from within the company, consultant, and community.
b) Receiving and attending to visitors forwarded to the office and providing them
necessary assistance.
c) Documentation work which included writing reports on activities implemented, and
filing.
d) Performing other duties assigned by the management.
