Exercise 1

Consider an urn containing $ white balls, & green balls and " red ball. The random
experiment consists in randomly selecting one balls from the urn and register its colour.
Write the sample space and the power set.

Exercise #
Consider an urn containing $ white balls and " red ball. The random experiment
consists in randomly selecting two balls from the urn and register their colour.
Let E be the event which occurs if only one red ball is selected and F be the event
which occurrs if two balls of the same colour are selected. Detemine the probability of
E and F both when the two balls are selected with replacement and without
replacement.

Exercise $
Consider three urns:
 the first contains & white balls and & black balls
 the second contains " white ball and * black balls
 the third contains * white balls and " black ball

The experiment consists in randomly selecting one urn and then randomly drawing a
ball from the selected urn. Compute the probability of E , where E denotes the event "a
white ball has been selected". Then, given that "a white ball has been selected",
determine the probability that the ball is selected from the first urn.

Exercise %
A swindler manipulated a die in such a way that the probability of getting one dot is
double than the probability of getting any other number of dots and a coin in such a way
that the probability of getting heads is double than the probability of getting tails. The
random experiment consists in throwing the die: if one dot appears the unfair coin is
flipped, otherwise the fair coin is flipped. Let E be the event "one dot occurs on the die"
and let F be the event "heads occurs". Determine the probability of flipping the unfair
coin. Moreover determine the probability of event F and then, given that F has
occurred, the probability of E.

Exercise &
The random experiment consists in tossing two coins: the first is fair while the second is
not fair as the probability of getting heads is three times the probability of getting tails.
Let E be the event which occurrs if at least one tail occurs and let F be the event which
occurs if exactly two tails occur. Evaluate the independence of E and FÞ

Exercise '
Consider two dice: the first is a fair die while the second has been manipulated in such a
way that the probability of getting a face with an odd number of dots is twice the
probability of getting a face with an even number of dots. The random experiment
consists in flipping a coin: if head appears, the fair die is thrown otherwise the
manipulated die is thrown. Compute the probability of getting the face with $ dots.
Given that the face with $ dots has appeared, compute the probability that the
manipulated die has been thrown.

Exercise (
An analyst predicts that there is a %!% chance that the U.S. economy performs well. If
the U.S. economy performs well, then there is an )!% chance that Asian countries will
also perform well. On the other hand, if the U.S. economy performs poorly, the
probability of Asian countries performing well goes down to !Þ$!Þ
The analyst aims to compute the probability that both the U.S. economy and the Asian
countries will perform well, the probability that the Asian countries perform well and
the probability that the U.S. economy will perform well, given that the Asian countries
perform well.
