 DOIs: Always include the DOI at the end of the citation (when available).
o Use the format beginning with https://doi.org or http://dx.doi.org. Follow the current
recommendation of the International DOI foundation to format DOIs in the reference
list.
o It is NOT necessary to include “Retrieved from” or “Accessed from” before the DOI.
o Only include retrieval date when source is likely to change or will not be archived. Follow
the format at the end of the citation: Retrieved Month Day, Year, from URL.
o It is acceptable to use either the default display setting for hyperlink (e.g. blue font,
underlined) or plain text that is not underlined.
o Links should be live if the work is published or read online.
o When a DOI is too long or complex you may use a shortened URL service. Use the
International DOI Foundation to create a short DOIs http://shortdoi.org/
o For works without DOIs from websites, provide a URL as long as the URL will work for
readers.
o For works without DOIs from an academic database, do not include a permalink, URL,
or database information. The reference should be treated like a print version of the work.

 When referring to books, chapters, articles, or webpage titles, capitalize only the first letter of
the first word of a title and subtitle, the first word after a colon or a dash in the title, and proper
nouns.

 Citing authors:
o Two to twenty authors: Separate the authors name with a comma, and place the &
symbol prior to the last author.
 Example: Last, F. M., Last, F. M., Last, F. M., & Last, F. M.
o More than twenty authors: List the first nineteen authors and then use ellipses (with no
ampersand) and then add the final author’s name.
 Example: Last, F. M., Last, F. M., Last, F. M., Last, F. M., Last, F. M., Last, F. M.,
Last, F. M., Last, F. M., Last, F. M., Last, F. M., Last, F. M., Last, F. M., Last, F.
M., Last, F. M., Last, F. M., Last, F. M., Last, F. M., Last, F. M., Last, F. M., …
Last, F. M.
o If a work has no author, consider using a group or organization responsible for the
publication (see section 9.11 in the APA manual). If none can be reasonably determined,
move the title of the work to the author followed by the date.
 For website citation include the website name, unless it is the same as the author.
 Clear guidelines for citing media contributors that are not authors or editors.
