PART II. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

I. RATIONALE

Gardening doesn’t just make our home’s outdoor space look beautiful and vibrant. It also
serves as good exercise, relieves stress, and increases happiness. “Backyard” meaning that we are
doing this at home and “gardening or farming” because we are applying a more systematic or
purposeful approach to growing food.
Growing your own vegetables can offer you the opportunity to reduce the amount of
pesticides that you use in your garden, making them healthier. Growing your own vegetables will
save your money at the grocery store, it also more organic than one buys at a store. Yes, we have the
means and ability to shop somewhere like whole food and purchase only the highest quality items,
but can you ever be sure what you are really buying?

4
We can’t buy vegetables at the store as organic as we are planting in our backyards.
Sometimes “organic”means dumped certified chemicals onto the crops instead non-certified organic
varieties.
Furthermore, backyard vegetable gardening has many benefits such as: save money on
groceries, natural stress reliever, source of income, helps you eat more fresh vegetables and
gardening also can be a fun family affair with your children and a chance to teach them many new
skills as well.

II. OBJECTIVES

The objective of this project are the following:

1. Input the beneficiaries with skills and knowledge of backyard gardening.

2. Establish a community garden that produces organic vegetables.
3. Produce at least a minimal source of income through gardening.

III.REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Local food production can provide an important contribution to a city’s sustainability

objectives (Martin & Marsden, 1999). Unfortunately, urban food sustainability has rarely been at the
forefront of policy and urban planning concerns in the United States, because agriculture is
considered a rural issue (Pothukuchi& Kaufman, 1999). Pothukuchi and Kaufman noted that the
urban food system is less visible than other systems such as transportation, housing, employment, or
even the environment, so it has received less consideration. Urban agriculture promotes economic
and social sustainability (Martin & Marsden, 1999; Mendes et al., 2008), and contributes to health,
welfare, the conservation of essential resources and the protection of environmental quality
(McCormack, Arneson, Laska, Larson & Story, 2010; Corrigan, 2011; Aubrey et al., 2012). Local
authorities in Great Britain identified a number of public benefits form urban food production, the
most frequently reported were: 1) community development, 2) a reduction in the distance food
travelled, 3) health and exercise benefits, 4) support for the local economy, 5) support for
sustainable development, 6) support for anti- poverty strategies, 7) encouragement of self-
sufficiency, and 8) encouragement of health eating(Martin & Marsden, 1999)
