Identifying Propaganda Strategies used in advertisement

Advertisement- whether on television or radio- need to add “paints” or “coating’’ to sell their
products to their audience. Companies use different propaganda devices to attract the audience to
buy their products.

Propaganda is a form of communication which is indented to manipulate, mislead distort, and

influence the attitude and the way of thinking of people toward an issue.

Propaganda Techniques are subtle ways that attempt to influence the opinions, emotions,
attitudes, or behaviors of a group in order to benefit the sponsor.

Study the types of advertisement below.

1. Bandwagon. As the name suggests, bandwagon is a propaganda device that implies that
many people use a certain product so you should join them too.

A woman’s best defense against PMS and cell degeneration.

Every woman in the world now uses Eve’s Rose as her best defense against PMS. It is a
rich source of Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) that triggers the production of prostaglandin which
helps stabilize and normalize her hormonal system, reducing PMS disorders by as much 89%. If
you want to look young like most women we know, then use Eve’s Rose now!

2. Transfer. In this propaganda devise, authority or respect given to a certain company,

group or person is transferred to the product to make it acceptable to the people.

Liconilin- the most effective nasal dongestant in the market today prescribed
by most pediatricians. Safe and fast ating-even doctors use it for their children !

You need a reliable cold-relief medicine for your children? Give them what
most pediatricians trust! Liconilin.

3. Glittering generality. This is the of “glowing” terms to sell a product. The terms
describe the exceptional qualities of the products to attract people to buy it even without
having tried it.

Smooth and white skin that is soft to touch – this is the promise of Venus whitening
cream! With Vitamin B3 and double sunshields that naturally whiten and smoothen your
skin. Your soft white skin will surely make heads turns! See the radiant change in just a
week. Use the whitening cream made just for you- Venus whitening cream.

4. Testimonial. This involves the testimony of a well-known personality who will testify to
the quality of the product by telling the public that he/she is using the product. People
tend to use the product in the hope that they will achieve the same effect.

“It all started in my grandmother’s kitchen. We were always present in all our family
gathering hoping to taste her Lengua that we all loved. The secret is in her sauce. That is
why I have been using Grandma’s sauce for years and now they can’t get enough of my
Lengua too.”

5. Name-Calling. This is a propaganda device that makes people form judgments without
benefit of evidence on which the judgment should be based. The intention of this
propaganda is to incite or invoke fear and to arouse prejudices.

6. Plain Folks. This device is used to present wealthy and powerful people as common or
ordinary people. The purpose of using this technique is to win people’s trust and
confidence.
Example:
“Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo planting rice stalks in a farm.

7. Stereotyping. In this propaganda device, people hold negative judgment or unpleasant

public belief about a certain group of people or individuals who d not belong to their
class or level. Their attitude stems from a generalization which leads inaccuracies. Like
name-calling, the purpose of using this type of propaganda is to arouse the prejudices of
an audience. The most widespread categories of stereotyping are race, religion, sex,
sexual orientation, and physical ability.
Examples :
a. Ilocanos are penny-pincher
b. Mountain people are dog-eaters.
c. Teenagers are rebels.
