Chapter 1

The Problem and its Background

Introduction

In today’s generation, people believe that beauty is

one of the important assets that every human being can have.
Inner and outer beauty reflects one’s personality. Beauty
stimulates an aesthetic feeling within a person, pleasing to
the eye, a sense of admiration. At this present day, most
of the people are concern with their skin specially
teenagers. Due to several reasons like stress in fulfilling
duties/obligations, physical body changes, exposure to too
much heat and many more (Felson, MD 2019). Teenagers tend to
experience different skin conditions like dry skin, acne,
and dark spots on their skin specially on their faces.
Therefore, many teenagers are using different skin care
products that are suitable to reduce and avoid this kind of
problems. These range of practices are what they called skin
care, it supports skin integrity, enhance its appearance and
relieve skin conditions.

Under skin care, moisturization is one of the important

things to look at, it helps keep your skin clear, smooth,
and wrinkle-free. There are several benefits and reasons why
people need to moisturize their skin. Most common is to keep
the skin hydrated, changes in weather and other
environmental factors suck the moisture right out of the

skin therefore applying moisturizers replaces moisture

that’s already lost, and it prevents dryness (Sussie, 2015).

Next to that would be acne and blemishes problems, when

your face gets dry, it produces more oil that can clog your
pores and cause breakouts. In order to avoid that, make sure
that your skin is properly hydrated. Also, people tend to
look ahead and start thinking about their ages.

In order for people to maintain moisturize and fine

skin, they are trying to use different cosmetic products
that will give them better solutions to their skin problems.
One of those recommendable would be the raw materials
instead of expensive commercialized cosmetic products. One
typical example of these is milk, there are different
nutrients coming from milk which is suitable for the skin to
stay healthy

(Nilankeeta, 2015). Milk contains Vitamin A, B6, biotin,

protein, lactic acid, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and
selenium. Vitamin A is for treatment of dry, flaky and
peeling skin. It is also essential for healthy new cell
division. Meanwhile, Vitamin B6, biotin, and protein are
responsible for healthy skin because these are necessary for
new skin cell formation like tissue repair and growth and
revitalizing dry and cracked skin. And lastly, potassium
aids to dry itchy skin, leaving it hydrated and moisturized.
It is proven that milk, especially raw milk, is a natural
face cleanser, great moisturizer, lighten tans and skin

tone, exfoliates skin cells and soothes sunburned and

inflamed skin.

Carabaos are one of the best sources of raw milk.

Carabao or domestic swamp buffalo is natively living in the
Philippines and named to be the national animal symbol of
the Philippines. To that information, production of
carabao’s milk is with high possibility. Carabao’s milk has
many health benefits. It is a good source of energy, good in
protein, less cholesterols, calcium booster, high in
phosphorus, more in iron and a Vitamin A supplier. Not just
for health, also, carabao’s milk may boosts skin health
because it is packed with multiple antioxidants and
vitamins. It keeps the skin nourished and vitalized with a
bevy of nutrients.

Knowing these benefits, the researchers came up with

the study of making an organic facial wash using carabao’s
milk as major ingredient for moisturization. This is to
provide an effective and efficient solution and lessen
teenagers’ hated skin problem.

Hypothesis

The moisturization of skin types using carabao milk

requires idea of external softening and shall have three
outcomes in the testing;

Ho: The moisturizer does not moisturize all skin types.

Ha: The moisturizer does moisturize all skin types.

Ha2: The moisturizer will moisturize only for a certain skin

type

Significance of the Study

The benefactors of the study who will be directly

affected are as follows:

The Students. The students of the institution will benefit

because they are able to use a readily available facial wash
moisturizer that can help in facial skin care needs because
of its natural ingredients.

Local Farmers. Local farmers are also one of the

benefactors, they will serve as one of the sources of raw
materials such as the main ingredients (carabao milk) in
process of making the product.

The Institution. The Institution will have an original

product that will contribute to provide the needs of the
community and in the market.

Review of Related Literature

Local Literature

Included at the article written by Patrice V. Miranda &

Alexandra Gono (2018) “It’s hard to not love beauty
products. They make you feel great, empowered, and
beautiful. However, Filipinos have long been inclined to
foreign products, instead of our own homegrown brands. In
the shadow of the multinational skin care and make-up
companies is a burgeoning industry based right here at home.
Back in 2010, the Gonzales family thought of an ingenious
new way to help out the farmers in Baliuag, Bulacan. They
developed a kind of soap made from carabao’s milk. These
natural soaps are sourced directly from local farmers and
are made with coconut oil and essential oils. And the best
part? Every sale contributes to the income of these Baliwag
dairy farmers.

“Competition is growing in the local scene, with many

personal care products being introduced at an affordable
price point,” Melanie Punongbayan, General Manager of Kala
Milk states. “Strong branding, clear differentiation, and
consistent messaging are critical in setting yourself apart
from other brands.” With the trend leaning more towards

natural and local products, Kala Milk thrives on customers

who look for diversity in their products. Their main market
is young mothers in their mid-twenties to thirties who are
opting for "more natural alternatives.” These natural
alternatives are also thought to be gentler on the skin and
are thus popular for infants and small children. For anyone
interested in their products, be sure to look out for their
popular Kala Milk soap and Kala Milk lotion.

According to the Garima Arora (2019) “Milk has been

popular for its benefits on skin. Milk is a rich source of
calcium and protein. Raw and unpasteurised milk or even
buttermilk can benefit your skin in many ways.
Dermatologists are of the opinion that milk and dairy
products are wholesome foods with a diverse vitamin profile.
Using organically sourced milk can help you have a soft,
smooth and wrinkle-free skin. Milk can be used as a natural
moisturizer for the skin. "Raw milk can be used as a facial
and body cleanser. It has lactic acid, vitamins A, D, E and
K and protein. This makes milk a mild exfoliating and
hydrating agent. Cold raw milk is very good toner,
especially for dry skin," says dermatologist Dr. Rinky
Kapoor.”

As stated by Anne Navarro (2018) “Kala Milk soaps are

natural and handcrafted using the cold process method. The
soaps are made from carabao’s milk, food-grade virgin
coconut oil, and other natural ingredients. Some essential

oils are also infused in the products to give some health

and skin benefits. Speaking of benefits, aside from avoiding
the harsh effects of chemicals on your skin, because the
soaps are all-natural, carabao’s milk offer a wide range of
perks! Milk, in general, helps improve the complexion of the
skin but carabao’s milk has high fat levels (good fat) with
about 10 to 12%, and vital proteins which most milks don’t
contain. This makes it more advantageous for your skin as
compared to regular milk. Carabao milk fat contains acids
that help your

skin look younger—like oleic acid and palmitic oil. In

a less technical note, carabao skin helps make your skin feel
soft and look radiant.”

According to the statement of Katherine Pendrill

(2015)” Kala Milk Soap is the world's first bath soap made
from carabao milk and other natural ingredients such as
coconut oil. Carabao milk has an extremely high content of
butterfat, which gives it exceptional moisturizing
properties. The soap is then enhanced with essential oils
for added skin-boosting benefits. The soap bars are
available in eight different varieties, each of which
targets a different skin problem. While the idea of using
animal milk to make bath soap is nothing new, Kala Milk Soap
makes use of a uniquely Filipino ingredient.”

As mention at the article by the incorporation of DVF

Dairy Farm (2015)” For carabao’s milk, this particular milk

contains high levels of fat (the good fat, up to 10-12%) and

vital proteins that are hardly comparable to any other type
of milk except goat milk. An interesting fact about the acid
components in the fats of this milk is that they make for a
younger skin, providing your skin cells with needed sebum-
like fatty acids and vitamins. Saturated and unsaturated
fats present high quantities of oleic acid and palmitic oil,
respectively.”

Foreign Literature

According to the article written by Reuven Yagi (2019)

“This chapter will deal with delivering of a substance in a
natural product, milk, via the skin – cosmeceuticals, from a
variety of sources, camels, equine, ruminant and breast
milk. The large quantities of bacteria on the normal skin,
both friendly and “bad” bacteria provide skin and body
health. The activity of cosmeceuticals of camel milk is due
to the specific milk components, whose efficacy is retained
in skin preparations which have not been destroyed in their
preparation. By using camel milk which is pathogen-free the
preparations are probiotic by definition and rapidly
penetrate the outer skin layers to be active in the deeper
layers. Massage therapy has been shown to improve
flexibility and range of motion and strengthen the immune
system. A list of the organic substances used for making the
cosmeceuticals is provided.”

As stated by Bhatt (2019) in her research “One of the

most effective raw milk benefits is moisturization. This is
not exactly a secret benefit of raw milk. Raw milk nourishes
deeper skin layers and offers conditioning and
moisturization from inside. It effectively treats the common
problem of winter dryness too. You can look forward to use
natural raw milk face masks to enjoy a well-toned and
moisturized skin for all seasons. It is so wonderful to
realize that a little juggling between ingredients make a
single product a good

toner, moisturizer as well as a cleanser. Raw milk offers

unmatched skin cleansing, as it deeply cleans the pores of
excessive oil, sebum, dirt and even blackheads.”

As mentioned by Gorakh Mal and K.M.L. Pathak (2010)

“Camel milk cream prepared by NRCC, Bikaner can be used as a
moisturizing cream. This was concluded on the basis of an
open pilot study conducted in 50 test group patients and 50
control group patients for 6 months. Moisturizing effect
with glowing/shining of skin was observed after using the
camel milk skin cream. Similar findings were also observed
in control group. The claims for anti-ageing/anti-wrinkling
property of camel milk skin cream are still to be proved.

According to an article written by Sushmita Sengupta

(2018)” For instance, goat milk, sheep milk and the very
popular buffalo milk. There are many people in India who
consume buffalo milk for various reasons. Buffalo milk

contains more calcium and other minerals like phosphorus,

magnesium and potassium as compared to cow milk, but cow
milk is lighter, low in fat. Buffalo milk is rich in
protein, calcium, iron, phosphorous, vitamin A, and several
other nutrients. Packed with multiple antioxidants and
vitamins, buffalo milk can do wonders for your skin. It
keeps your skin nourished and vitalized with a bevy of
nutrients. You can also use buffalo milk to make your own
milk-face pack for a supple and glowing skin.

As studied by Kristin Collins Jackson (2015) “Goat milk

has been forced upon me since the realization that I was
lactose-intolerant, and it's made its way into my beauty
routine as well. According to sources at Livestrong, cow’s
milk causes acid to form in the body, while goat’s milk has
a pH level closer to that of humans. This is a good thing,
because the pH levels in our skincare definitely affect how
our complexion looks and feels, especially if you're dealing
with hormonal outbreaks. Goat’s milk has made a recent claim
to fame in soaps by delaying signs of aging; apparently the
fat molecules in goat’s milk contain anti-inflammatory
properties, and you know that’s what’s up when it comes to
smoothing wrinkles and pimple. Goat’s milk is antibacterial
so it makes for a great cleansing for acne-prone skin.
However, if you wear makeup, you’ll need to remove it before
trying goat’s milk on its own.”

(2020)” This chapter conveys the untapped property of camel
milk as cosmeceutical. The camel milk ingredients (i.e.,
water, ascorbic acid, alpha hydroxy acid, polyunsaturated
fatty acid, peptides, and micronutrients) make it a cost-
effective cosmeceutical with no adverse cutaneous or
systemic reactions. It may be used as a photoprotective,
moisturizing, anti-wrinkle, anti-aging skin softener. The
bioactive ingredients may begin the new class of natural
cosmeceutical when consumed orally or applied topically.”

According to the study written by Andrea Arterbery

(2015) “Pure milk is extremely soothing and hydrating for
the skin, so milk baths, cold milk soaks or using topical
beauty products with milk as the main ingredient is a great
way to soothe and moisturize any dry, irritated areas of the
body," says dermatologist Amy Brodsky. "Low-sugar yogurt
contains probiotics, which aid in keeping your skin free of
breakouts, so eating low-sugar yogurts or using them in your
skin-care routine—for example a yogurt-and-honey face mask—
can help keep acne at bay," says Brodsky.”

Summary, Conclusion, Recommendation

Conclusion

Moisturizer is one of the essential things needed for

the facial area to hydrate dry skin and to maintain a
healthy skin lifestyle. Due to the lack of resources for
moisturizing the researcher conducted an experiment on how
to make a natural moisturizer using carabao milk. The
researcher concludes that using of carabao milk as the main
ingredient for formulating an organic facial wash is
effective for skin moisturization. Its quality in terms of
effectiveness is not the same as commercial products sold in
the market but because of its natural ingredients it is safe
to consume by humans and environmentally friendly. Adding
essential oils help the product to be more alluring in
smell, it also adds beneficial effects on the facial area.
The researcher also conclude that essential oils can be used
as preservatives, it helps the product to last longer.
