HVPD have developed a new technique for the On-line PD Testing of HV Cable Sealing Ends
through testing work in 2006/7 with ScottishPower in the UK and Portugen in Portugal.
The reason for the development of this new test technique was as a result of the failure of a
number of 132kV and 220kV porcelain cable sealing ends by the customers.
Photos of Sealing Ends Testing – Failure was due to tracking along the
silicone stress cone which led to a fault and explosion of the porcelain
sealing end

Following a failure in the 275kV cable termination in the 21BAT transformer, the cable and
sealing end were replaced. The commissioning of the new equipment on 21BAT prompted
these measurements which were carried out On-line, but with the control of the voltage using the
generator exciter control. The test involved exciting the transformer and cable up to working
voltage with no measurable PD activity and to continue the test for 24 hours as per the IEC
‘soak test’ recommendation.

To ascertain the location of the PD event, the signals were timed coming from the various
sensors. The results shows that the Blue Phase TEV signal (red colour) on
the HV side leads the Blue Phase CT (blue colour) signal by about 15nSec.
This represents a distance of 5m travelling at the speed of light in air.
All other signals trailed the Blue Phase TEV in time, showing that the signals could not originate
in the other phases. The TEV probe on the LV side of the transformer also showed that it could
not originate on the LV side of the system. The timings show clearly that this was a PD event
originating in the HV side of the blue phase cable sealing end.
The PD was located at the support insulators on the blue phase connecting link between the HV
cable sealing end and the transformer output bushing as shown below.
The support insulators were removed and then renewed which resulted in a discharge free
operation for the HV side of the blue phase.
The following list includes our main Electricity Utility Customers, Industrial HV Plant Owner
TM
Customers and HV Test Company Customers for the HVPD Longshot PD Test Unit and
associated On-line PD Test Services . Since launching the technology in March 2004, HVPD
TM
LTD have sold over 75 Longshot PD Test units into 20 countries around the world and have
provided PD Test services in 18 countries. With this extensive applications knowledge, we are
TM
therefore confident that our HVPD Longshot PD Test technology can be applied to any
electricity network, anywhere around the world.
NEAS, Norway
NEAS purchased our On-line PD Test and Mapping system in November 2004 and are using it
alongside an Off-line VLF PD Test system to test and screen their MV and HV cables and
switchgear for PD.

Hi
We are looking at procuring on-line PD test equipment. ALBA is the largest modern
Aluminium Smelter in the world, we have four gas fired power stations of our own, with
about 38 generators, of which at least six is steam turbines. As electrical equipment
only have limited life, tests have to be performed and for this reason we are looking at
on-line testing, as we can’t afford any down-time.
What is the ease of use of the equipment? This include safety of personnel as it
will be used for on-line testing!
How reliable is the data provided, in other words, with the obtained data, is it at
all possible to make an educated guess as to the state of the equipment under
test?
Users must be familiar with the various types of corona, partial discharge, and
tracking waveform signatures. This knowledge must be applied during data
review to properly identify the waveform signatures. Knowledge in this area is
the basis for effectively identifying problems and making recommendations for
resolution of discovered partial discharge.
The intelligent software included with the HVPD LongShot device does assist
the Field Engineer in making an assessment of the state of the equipment under
test.
Did the test results match the physical inspection, eg. Where the data indicated
a cable problem, was the problem on the cable, or was it maybe on the
transformer or the switchgear? Your guess in percentage as to the reliability of
the data.
Emerson has been performing Cable PD testing since 2003, so we already had
several years of experience in testing & data interpretation before purchasing
HVPD equipment.
How regularly do you utilize your equipment? Was it worth the investment or in
your experience, would you suggest HVPD to provide the service without the
customer buying and utilizing?
Is the equipment in your opinion something that will be utilized for years, or will it
only be current for a year or two?
Use of this technology and PD testing equipment is a regular part of our service
business, as we promote this PD testing service to our customers across the
USA.
You might consider asking HVPD to provide periodic PD testing at your facility,
closely observe the PD field testing process and then discuss the results with
HVPD after receipt of PD Test Report.
Then, you could discuss with HVPD if your company has the appropriate
technical personnel that could be trained to perform PD testing on site.
Users of this technology must keep up with the evolution of the technology
through review of current papers and new discoveries.
Generally speaking, many types of Industrial customers around the world have
utilized Online PD testing to obtain an assessment & identification of existing
Partial Discharge problems, often preventing unplanned power outages
because of advance notification of potential problem areas. This type of
predictive maintenance testing is online and non-destructive.
Is there any other information you feel might be worth utilizing in the decision making
process?
