Study of phenomena, something
that exists as a part of the world in
which we live. Events, situations,
experiences or concepts.
 Type of qualitative research
 Shares a concern with
microsocial interaction,
between individuals or within
small groups.
 Acknowledgement that there is
a gap in understanding a
specific phenomenon.
 Clarification or illumination on
that phenomenon will be of
benefit.
DIFFERENCES
 Phenomenological research
will not provide definitive
explanations but it will raise
insightful awareness.
 Method of philosophical
enquiry, involving the
systematic investigation.
ETHNOMETHODOLOGY
Investigation of the methods by
which people make sense: of their
activities, both to themselves and
to others.
 Type of qualitative research.
 Shares a concern with
microsocial interaction,
between individuals or within
small groups.
 Through language, social life
is a continual and routine
accomplishment.
 Language is reflexive on
everyday actions.
 Distinguishes a world of
scientific discourse from a
world of everyday language.
 Analysis of conversation with
the syntax of everyday
speech.
 Idea of a system of socially-
objectified values that unite
individuals into a group.
 Investigates the rules for
attributing values through the
analysis of implicit background
knowledge of the context as

interaction that provides the
