HISTORY OF MANIPUR
Ruled by kings for over centuries, the ancient history of
Manipur dates back to 33 A.D. The birthplace of Modern Polo,
a land of exquisite culture and diverse ethnicity, the rich and
vibrant past of Manipur still remains unexplored. One of the
remarkable events in the history of Manipur is the Battle
of Imphal (4th to 6th April 1944), an intense battle which
marks an important role in India’s freedom struggle. Manipur
officially became an Indian state in the year 1972. This land of
pristine natural beauty and ancient structures can transport

FOOD
If there could be one word to describe a Manipuri cuisine; that
would be “healthy”. The food is rich in aroma from the local herbs
and is mostly steam cooked rather than fried. A typical Manipuri
platter mainly comprises of rice, vegetables, salad, a curry of fish
or meat. The Meiteis from the valley have one of the most elaborate
vegetarian platters. Chak-hao Kheer, a delicious kheer made of black
sticky rice and milk is quite a delicacy. Most ingredients used are
organic and similar to the Southeast-East-Central Asian cuisine.

 FESTIVALS OF
One of the largest festivals celebrated in grandeur the
festival captivates people from all over India and around
the world. A grand affair, the festival glorifies the culture,

MANIPUR handlooms, handicrafts, indigenous sports, music,

adventure sports and cuisine of Manipur. The festival
promotes the cultural extravaganza of Manipur through
music, dance and various native art forms that are part of the
Manipuri tribes and people. Ras Leela, the classical dance
form of Manipur is quite famous and forms an important part
along with other folk dance performances.

An opportunity for artisans and weavers to showcase

their creativity and talent through the indigenous forms
of handicrafts and handlooms. One can also have insights
about the living-style of various tribes through the themed
huts display at the heritage park.

Locals exhibit their skills in the native sports which includes

the famous martial art of Manipur - Thang Ta (a combination
of Spear & Sword skills) along with other sports. Sagol
Kangjei is the indigenous form of polo that is extensively
played here. Apart from these sports, one may also enjoy and
indulge in adventure sports like trekking, white water rafting
and parasailing at various locations.

Time of the year - November
The Sangai festival is the most awaited festival in Manipur. This
annual festival is named after the state animal, the Sangai or
the brow antlered deer found only in Manipur. Started in the
year 2010, the festival aims to showcase Manipur’s rich cultural
heritage and indigenous tradition which is still undiscovered
by many.

 SHRUI LILY FESTIVAL
Time of the year - April/May
Another extravagant festival in honour of the state flower, Shirui
Lily. The celebration is during the peak blooming season of the
Shirui Lily, a rare and endangered flower that can only be found
in Manipur. Shirui lily grows on top of the Shirui hills in Manipur
and cannot be replanted anywhere else in the world. The state
flower of Manipur fills the air with its pleasant fragrance during the
blooming season. The festival is observed primarily with an aim
to spread awareness and conserve the endangered state flower
“Shirui Lily”. The festival provides an opportunity for people from
various communities and tribes to come together, explore the
highest hill-station of Manipur, the picturesque Ukhrul district and
get deeper insights about the Tangkhul Naga tribe dwelling here.
Climbing the Shirui hills is one of the most interesting treks in
Manipur and a chance to see the rare flower. It is an ultimate treat
for nature and adventure lovers.
The Shirui festival is a colourful celebration spread over 5
days showcasing numerous traditional and cultural activities.
The events during the festival includes live music concerts,
folk performances, traditional dances, indigenous games
and competitions, art and handicraft exhibitions, ethnic food
eateries and various adventure activities like camping, biking
and a lot more.

Shirock, the musical extravaganza of live music concerts and
competition is one of the major highlights of the festival that
attracts a large number of music lovers from different corners
of the State, and even from the neighboring states. International
rock bands like Nazareth and Extreme have performed here.
BARAK FESTIVAL
Time of the year - Winter
Following the trend of glorifying nature, the Barak festival
honours the Barak river in Manipur, one of its most important
natural water sources. The festival is organized to highlight
the district of Senapati, this festival has the beautiful theme
of sustaining peace and harmony, celebrating a river that allow
this civilization to flourish.
The festival is a showcase of traditional hospitality, richness
of culture, nature’s abundance and social-economic affinity
of the Barak communities. The festival aims to rejuvenate
and revive the cultural heritage and values of the people by
bringing them together. The events organized during the
festival includes musical nights, folk tales, local cuisine,
indigenous dance and music, camping, trekking and a lot
more. Join in celebrating the sources that give us life on this
festive occasion.

 ANNUAL FESTIVALS
OF MANIPUR
As a part of culture and custom, festivals play a significant
role in the lives of the people of Manipur.
GAAN-NGAI
Time of the year - January
The Gaan-Ngai is a festival of the Kabui Nagas in Manipur. It is also
described as a new year festival and marks the end of the year and
the beginning of the new year. The Gaan-Ngai is a post-harvest
festival when the granaries are full, the landscape is dry and the whole
village is free from all agricultural activities. It’s a time for celebration,
festivity, and worship of the God and honouring of the dead.

LUI-NGAI-NI
Time of the year - 15th February every year
A festival of great revelry, it is celebrated by the Tangkhul Naga
tribe every year. A festival celebrated during the season of spring
signifying the sowing of seeds and the start of the year for the
Tangkhul Nagas. During this festival, the gods of crops are invoked
to pour their blessings on the seeds sown so that they grow to bear
fruits for a copious harvest. The blessing of the almighty is besought
through dances, songs, and rituals.
YAOSANG (DOL-JATRA)
Time of the year - March
Yaosang is a festival celebrated in Manipur for five days in spring,
starting on the full moon day of the month of Lamda. Yaosang is
considered the most important festival for the Meiteis of Manipur.
Like Holi, the Hindu Meitei of Manipur play with colours during this
festival. The main highlight of the festival is the Thabal Chongba (a
folk dance). During the first day of the festival, young boys and girls
go from door to door and collect money and spend it on celebrations.
This is a part of the tradition during this joyous festival.
CHEIRAOBA
Time of the year - April
A lunar new year festival known as Meetei Cheiraoba or Sajibu
Cheiraoba it is celebrated by people who follow the Sanamahi
religion in Manipur. The day begins with rituals and offerings of fruits,
vegetables, rice and other uncooked food items to the Meitei deity
Lainingthou Sanamahi. After receiving blessings an even number of
dishes are prepared using the offerings. After the dishes for the feast
are made, they are offered at two different traditional locations around
the house: one at the front and the other at the rear of the house.

 LAI HARAOBA
Time of the year - May/June
An important religious festival celebrated in honour of the sylvan
deities known as Umang Lai, the festival represents the worship of
traditional deities and ancestors. As a part of the custom, a number
of men and women dance in front of the ancient divinities. The Lai
Haraoba of God-Thangjing, the ruling deity of Moirang, is the most
famous one and attracts huge gatherings. The name Lai Haraoba in
Meitei language literally translates to “Festivity of the Gods”.

RATH JATRA
Time of the year - July
A popular festival celebrated by the Meitei community in the state.
This holy festival is typically the Manipuri version of the Rath Jatra in
Odisha’s Lord Jagannath temple at Puri. Celebrated for about 10 days,
the journey of the Rath is accompanied by the music of drums, bells,
conch, and gongs played by the pilgrims.
HEIKRU HITONGBA
Time of the year - September
The Heikru Hitongba Festival is an annual festival celebrated with
a boat race that takes place on the canal of Shri Bijoy Govindajee
Temple, Imphal West. Narrow longboats are used for this race which
accommodates a large number of rowers. The spirit of the crew
members are high and the entire race is full of vigor.

KUT FESTIVAL
Time of the year - 1st November every year
Celebrated by the tribes of Kuki-Chin-Mizo. An autumn festival where
all tribal groups of Manipur come together. The Kut festival thanks
the deities for providing a good harvest. Observed with much zeal,
this festival is an amazing event.
NINGOL CHAKKOUBA
Time of the year - November

MERA HOUCHONGBA
Time of the year - October
Strength lies in numbers, and this festival aims to reinforce that.
The Mera Houchanga fosters brotherhood and collaboration in
the princely state of Manipur. People from various communities
A social festival celebrated to reinforce the bond between a married
woman and their paternal family. The Meiteis celebrate this festival
every year by welcoming their married daughters along with their
children to enjoy a sumptuous feast at home. The name Ningol
Chakkouba literally translates to “inviting the daughters for a meal”. It
is a much-awaited occasion for family reunions.

LOKTAK LAKE
Bishnupur District | Distance from Imphal 48 km
The largest freshwater lake in northeast India. A scenic and
mystical lake which resembles a miniature inland sea. This
iconic lake is famed for its unique floating swamps, known
as Phumdis, and the world’s only floating National park, the
Keibul Lamjao. Treat yourself at the tourist home on one of
the large Phumdis.

KHONGHAMPAT ORCHIDARIUM

A paradise of orchids with more than 110 unique varieties
across 200 acres, the Orchidarium is not to be missed in

sweet fragrance and wonderful views, the Khonghampat
Orchidarium is a whole new world!

SHIRUI HILLS

A scenic hill-top panorama covered with stretches of
vibrant wildflowers and the rare state flower, the Shirui lily,
the Shirui hills are home to some rare birds and wildlife. An

in plethora during the month of May and June, adorning the
hilltop of the peak. This magnificent beauty promises to

KHANGKHUI LIME CAVES

An unparalleled experience not to be missed. Take a walk
back in time in this prehistoric sedimentary limestone
cave. Enclosed by different patterns of stalagmites and

is an enthralling experience for tourists, archaeologists, and

DZUKO VALLEY
Senapati District | Distance from Imphal 82.8 km
Untouched nature, an offbeat trek from Manipur to
Nagaland. The Dzuko valley is a famous spot for adventure
lovers and trekkers. Well known for its jaw-dropping
landscapes and flora, the valley is also among the best
treks in Manipur and attracts a constantly growing number
of tourists. The valley is splendid from the end of June till

A mystical cave of great archaeological and historical
significance. An ideal destination for those in search of
adventure, these unexplored caves are presumed to have

BARAK WATERFALLS

YANGKHULLEN

Explore the unexplored. Yanglhullen village is home to the
primitive Zeme tribe. This hamlet is built on a rocky slope
where the whole village and its people live together like one

This second-largest valley in Manipur is inhabited by the
Rongmei tribe. One can have a sight of giant earthen dams,

which is now a famous picnic spot. This valley is truly a sight

SADU CHIRU WATERFALL
Senapati District | Distance from Imphal 20-25 km
A picturesque waterfall from a height of 300 meters
(approx). The path to Sada Chiru waterfalls is across fields,
streams, forests and ultimately a climb up stone steps for a
spectacular view of the lush green valley. It is an enjoyable
trekking experience for hikers.

One of the best hill stations in Manipur, a day spent at
Phangrei peak leaves a lasting memory because of its
pristine beauty. Phangrei joins the Shirui Peak which

INTEGRATED TOURIST DESTINATION TUPUL
Noney District | Distance from Imphal 64 km
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the
Integrated Tourist Destination in January 2018 at Tupul,
Noney district. This is being developed with the objective of
promoting the district of Noney as one of the niche off-beat
destinations in the state. The destination is located near the
ongoing highest railway bridge project.

Jiribam District | Distance from Imphal 201 km
Situated at Jiribam District of Manipur the Ningshing Khun
village has a biodiversity park which is a tourist spot and
a memorial complex to honour the legendary heroes Bir
Tikendrajit, General Thangal and Paona Brajabashi.

KEIBUL LAMJAO NATIONAL PARK
Loktak Lake, Bishnupur District | Distance from Imphal 50-55 km
The only floating National park in the world. Described as
a birder’s paradise, this floating National Park is a one of a
kind visual treat not to be missed. An entire ecosystem in
itself with diverse flora and fauna, this park is home to the
endangered brow-antlered deer, Sangai.

RED HILL (MAIBAM LOKPACHING) &
INDIA PEACE MEMORIAL
Bishnupur District | Distance from Imphal 16 km
A renowned historic place in Manipur, this World War II site is
where the Japanese soldiers joined the Indian National Army
and fought against the British. The war veterans have built
a monument named as “India Peace Memorial” to honour the
Japanese Martyrs. It is a place of pilgrimage for Japanese
tourists.

KHONGJOM WAR MEMORIAL
Thoubal District | Distance from Imphal 36 km
This memorial commemorates Major General Paona
Brajabashi putting his courage and skill on full display as
he beat back the might of the British army in 1891. The foot
of the hillock where he laid down his life is honoured by the
memorial atop Kheba hill. People pay their respects to the
martyrs on Khongjom day every 23rd of April.

IMPHAL WAR CEMETERY
Imphal East and West Districts | Within Imphal city
A poignant site dedicated to soldiers who sacrificed
their lives in the battle against Japanese forces during
World War II. Maintained by the Commonwealth War
Graves Commissions it is the final resting place for 1600
Commonwealth service personnel. Each memorial bears
the insignia of each of the fallen soldier in brass plaques. A
trip to Imphal is not complete without paying tributes at this
historic site.

INA MEMORIAL
Moirang, Bishnupur District | Distance from Imphal 48 km
A place of great significance in India’s struggle for
freedom. This memorial honours the noble sacrifices
made by Indian soldiers under the leadership of Netaji
Subash Chandra Bose. The museum has a collection of
priceless photographs, letters, badges of rank and other
war memorabilia. A visit to this memorial will give deeper
insights on India’s freedom struggle.

KANGLA
Imphal West District | At the centre of the Imphal City
A symbol of Manipur’s glory, a must-see for history buffs and art
lovers. Kangla is the most important historical and archaeological
site in Manipur. Kangla served as the royal palace since the period
of Pakhangba. Numerous holy shrines are spread across the palace
and the site is a sacred place for the Meiteis. Located at the heart
of Imphal, this ancient capital of Manipur was reinvented by the
British. The enticing beauty of the fort and the dramatic elegance
of the surrounding makes it a major destination for tourists. A
perfect place to quickly unwind yourself and relax for a moment.

SHAHEED MINAR
Imphal West District | Centre of the Imphal City
Also known as the Martyr’s Memorial, this imposing pillar is
a homage to patriotic Meitei and tribal martyrs including the
then crown prince, Bir Tikendrajit Singh who was hanged to
death having fought the British during Anglo-Manipuri war in
1891. The monument consists of three vertical beams held
together at the top by three mythical dragons.

SHREE SHREE GOVINDAJI TEMPLE

Imphal East District | Within the Imphal City

Shree Shree Govindajee temple is a historic centre of the

Vaishnaviates in Manipur. Twin domes covered with gold plated
sheets, paved courtyard, and large congregation hall are noted
features. The presiding deity, Radha-Krishna is carved out of
a jackfruit tree. The temple attracts large number of devotees
who participate in various devotional activities. Tourists are
welcome to come and join in the daily festivities and even enjoy
a huge vegetarian spread (prasad) at a nominal fee.

MUTUA MUSEUM
Andro, Imphal East District | Distance from Imphal 26 km
A cultural complex, the museum houses multiple artifacts
from all over the north-east such as rare coins, manuscripts,
wood carvings and jewellery. Highlights include replicas of
houses of different tribes and ethnic groups from all over
the state.

KAINA TEMPLE & SHRI BUNGSHIBUDON TEMPLE
Thoubal District | Distance from Imphal 29 km
A small hillock held sacred to Hindus, it is a centre of culture.
Granting a look into the Hindu culture, Kaina Temple is also
home to a divine jackfruit tree, from which, it is believed that
an idol of a god was carved.
Shri Bungshibudon Temple is located at Khangabok, Thoubal
district a few kms away from Kaina temple.

SHRI BIJOY GOVINDAJI TEMPLE, SAGOLBAND
Imphal West District | Within the Imphal city
Considered the oldest temple in Manipur by many, it is
believed that the elder brother of the god in the Shree
Shree Govindajee Temple resides here, and thus has many
architectural similarities with the temple. Peaceful and

The Manipur State Legislative Assembly located at Chingmeirong,
Imphal stands as a massive political victory of the state. Manipur
was accepted as an Indian state on 21 January, 1972. It carries an
assembly with 60 seats.This new complex from the Old Manipur
Legislative Assembly building is now preserved as the Legislative
Assembly Museum & Archives which aims to showcase the journey
of Manipur’s political change from autocracy to democracy. The
rich cultural legacy and administrative achievements of the state
are remarkable. The museum has 13 galleries, more than 300 rare
photographs, historically significant archival materials and 13 oil
paintings. The other collection includes textiles, metal swords,
wooden artefacts, bamboo and cane products, etc.
