1.1. Definition of Curriculum From your experience, how do you define the term ‘curriculum’?

A curriculum is A course of study that will enable the learner to acquire

specific knowledge and skills. A curriculum is the combination of instructional
practices, learning experiences, and students' performance assessment that are
designed to bring out and evaluate the target learning outcomes of a particular
course.

I will define the term curriculum by given subject or course of study that to be taught in school.

Curriculum is a standards-based sequence of planned experiences where students

practice and achieve proficiency in content and applied learning skills.

The term curriculum refers to the lessons and academic content taught in a school or in a
specific course or program.

Self-Assessment 1 The head teacher of a barrio school decided to change the school timetable. The
new timetable is shown below. Study it and answer the questions that follow it.
1. Why do you think there was poor attendance on Wednesday?
2. Why do you think there was good attendance on Thursday? 3. If parents started withdrawing
their children, saying that there was little learning going on in this school, what do you think is their
interpretation of curriculum

2 1. What is your own definition of a curriculum? Do you have a traditional view of a curriculum, a
progressive view or both? Explain your view based on your definition.

A curriculum is a way of structuring training to specific targets, of knowledge, skills and

attitudes. It can be based on ways of structuring an academic subject, or on theories of
how we learn and connect and build from our learning.
both. This would be the traditional view of the curriculum. Structured, exam defined,
academic content, skills and attitude. Progressive would be more focused on learning
through enquiry, the children’s inquisitiveness directing the learning and how they learn.
The teacher supporting the child, assisting where needed, helping the development of
learning and understanding. Here assessment is more self-assessment, and assessment
that allows the child to build on what they have done and also to learn from mistakes.
Learning from mistakes is a very important part of the progressive curriculum. Making
possible answers and explanations and finding out if they can be tested and confirmed
as right or not…

final answer
For me, a curriculum is the course of study for a specific school, program, grade
or class. A course has objectives, a curriculum has goals. The courses that are the
building-blocks of the curriculum are included and ordered to help the learner to attain those
goals.

Both. Before the modern view came, we already have the traditional view of the
curriculumwhich gives importance to the cognitive development of the learner. It was already
proven to beeffective for many years but since times are changing, experts
proposeda n e w v i e w o f curriculum called progressive view to be able to go with
the flow of the dynamic culture.
