Lecture No. 10:Analysis of Damages due to Disaster

Engr. Bilal Nasar

Lecturer

Date:
Effects of Disaster
Natural disasters such as
earthquakes, floods, typhoons, and
hurricanes inflict serious damage and
so seem to be bad for the economy.
For firms, natural disasters destroy
tangible assets such as buildings and
equipment – as well as human capital
– and thereby deteriorate their
production capacity.
 These adverse impacts may
sometimes be fatal to the firms and
result in them being forced to close
down.

Continued..
But sometimes disasters come with opportunities for someone.
Let’s take an example when an earthquake comes the demand for
engineers(esp. Civil and telecom) increases.
People tend to understand the difference of contractor’s construction and
an engineers structure. Such things happened after the earthquake of
2005 and in mirpur after facing the earthquake of 2019
Let’s take a second example of COVID 19 these as mentioned in few
previous lectures it persued the nations and states to increase the
research work and urged the government to increase the force of doctors.
The research work is demanded in this regard to produce the vaccine so
that the lockdown can be lowered and the lifes can be set back to its
norm.

Disaster and losses
If we look back to the time period
from 1980 to 2019, out of all the disaster
events, the highest damage is said to be
done by the tropical cyclones. This is
around the U.S. $927.5 billion,
(consumer price index i.e. CPI
adjusted).
Every year, several natural disasters hit
the U.S in different parts, leading to a lot
of damage and financial loss. For
instance, according to the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration, in 2017, the
environmental disasters have
caused $306 billion damage in total
across the U.S

• The losses incurred due to these cyclones also have the highest
average event cost i.e. $22.1 billion per event, CPI adjusted.
• These disasters include hurricanes and multiple wildfires, and it is
believed that the U.S. experienced a historic year of such weather
and climate disasters. This means, there’s a huge amount of
financial loss occurring every year.

DISASTER MANAGEMNENT 6
How much do natural disasters cost per year?
The natural disasters are becoming
more frequent and not to forget, more
expensive.
It has become a trend which is,
unfortunately, likely to continue even in
the future.
But, the sad part is; the majority of the
states aren’t even sure about how much
they are spending on preparing and
recovering from such events.
Every natural disaster comes with its
own set of expenses. Like, for floods, the
average cost per event is estimated to be
around $4.3 billion. If we look at the
statistics of such different type of
disasters of some years, we end up
getting the below-mentioned alarming
figures according to the National
Centers for Environmental Information.

Disaster and loss of animals
If we look at the statistics of such
different type of disasters of some
years, we end up getting the below-
mentioned alarming figures according
to the National Centers for
Environmental Information.
some measures like restoring coastal
marshes, treating stressed vegetation
in wildfire-prone areas, and increasing
the flood-preparedness of homes can
help. But, as per the National Climatic
Assessment, climate change is not in
our hands and is still outpacing our
plans and measures.
What we can do is reduce our carbon
emissions as quickly as possible to
save our climate and weather pattern.

Disaster and Environment
But, as per the National Climatic
Assessment, climate change is not in
our hands and is still outpacing our
plans and measures.
What we can do is reduce our carbon
emissions as quickly as possible to save
our climate and weather pattern.
Weather forecast sometimes become
unpredictable because of continues
manmade activities.

DISASTER MANAGEMNENT 9
The Kashmir earthquake of October 8, 2005
According to government figures, 19,000
children died in the earthquake, most of
them in widespread collapses of school
buildings.
The earthquake affected more than
500,000 families.
 In addition, approximately 250,000 farm
animals died due to collapse of stone
barns, and more than 500,000 large
animals required immediate shelter from
the harsh winter.
It is estimated that more than 780,000
buildings were either destroyed or
damaged beyond repair, and many more
were rendered unusable for extended
periods of time.
DISASTER MANAGEMNENT 10
Future Recomendations
Out of these, approximately 17,000
school buildings and most major
hospitals close to the epicenter were
destroyed or severely dam- aged.
Summarizing it severely affected the
economy of ajk and Pakistan.
Afterwards sensible framed
construction was on track to reduce
the effect created by such earthquake.
A joint project from IDB and AJK
started to reduce further loss of
children studying in schools in such
incidents. This project is likely to end
in the last of this year.
