Background or history of the business / destination

Balaw-Balaw Restaurant and Art Gallery was established in October 30, 1982 by Mr. Perdigon N.

Vocalan and Mrs. Luzvimin L. Vocalan in Angono Rizal, the Art Capital of the Philippines. In 1980’s it

started as a painting studio and today, it is considered as one of the best local restaurants in Rizal. Its art

gallery features the many hundred paintings, sculptures and woodcarvings. It also features a separate

two-story art gallery with works by Perdigon Vocalan (the late owner) and other local artists, as well as

religious artifacts. The name of the restaurant Balaw-Balaw came from a famous dipping sauce from

Angono that is made of fermented rice, shrimps, and bamboo shoots. The restaurant has the

appearance of a gigantic nipa hut; the interior is spacious and surrounded by pleasant light, and it

combines in harmoniously with the surrounding traditional antiques and native artifacts, such as the

banga or clay-pot jar, which they filled with water for hand washing. They built the Balaw-Blaw

Restaurant to preserve and stimulate Filipino tradition and culture, which is highlighted with easel

paintings that portray Filipino folkways. The menu is extensive of authentic Filipino cuisines, cooked in

the traditional way and it offers authentic and popular exotic foods.
