TROOP POSITIONS Scoutmaster’s Minute

SPL* - A.J.
ASPL* – Zach C. I found this quote in an older version of "Orientation for New Scout Parents'
Patrol Leaders* "What is important for us [as adults in Scouting] is:
War Machines - Joseph NOT the food on the campout, but that the boys cooked it.

Eagle – Alex N. NOT a sharp-looking flag ceremony, but that the boys put it together.
.. NOT who would make the best Patrol Leader [in our opinion], but that the boys
Special Forces – Quentin
elect one.
Assistant Patrol Leaders NOT that Johnny learns first aid, but that Billy teaches him.
War Machines – David W.H. NOT that we cover everything on the meeting agenda, but that the Senior
Eagle – Adam Patrol Leader is in charge.

Special Forces – Patrick Our goal is not to get things done, but to create a safe and healthy
environment with the training and resources that the Scouts need, and then let
Scribe* - Jake them do it.
Quartermaster*– Brendan It can be a very messy business, and painful to watch. Meetings where the
boy leaders are in charge can be very chaotic. And it can be very tempting for
Troop Guide – Marty adults to jump in and sort things out, because that is what adults do. But we
Chaplain Aid – David W.H. have to remember that that is the process of Scouting. That is how they
learn—even from disorganization and failure.
Historian – Kaden
We just have to remember that our business as adults is not the same as the
Webmaster*– Ethan business of the boys. It is up to them to get things done. It is up to us to make
Leave no Trace – David H. sure they have what they need, but (within the bounds of health and safety)
not what they do with it."

Luminaria Build PAGE 3 December 2019

This year in addition to our annual tree

sale the troop sold luminaria kits. After
passing out flyers door to door and
also using social media for sales. The
troop built and delivered 368 kits to
122 customers. Surprisingly the build
only took about 2 ½ hours. Six delivery
drivers each had about an hour’s
worth of deliveries to make. Overall it
was a very profitable fundraiser for
the participating scouts.

The 10th annual Troop 284 Christmas

Tree sale was yet another success. All
175 trees ordered were sold. The first
weekend definitely had better weather
than the second weekend. We saw many
repeat customers. This year the trees
that were delivered were huge! Some
were twelve feet tall! Those that
purchased those got a great deal for a
beautiful tree. Of of the 175 trees only
about three were really “bad” trees.
Even the worse “Charlie Brown” tree
sold. Without everyone’s participation
this would not have been possible.
5 Here’s to another great sale next year.
Who will be the first scout to hear all of them???
