ASSESSMENT TASK No. 3

Jodinel, a gifted high school student, wants to become a lawyer in the

future. Because she comes from a poor family, she needs a scholarship in
order to attend college. Some of her classes require students to do extra
research projects in order to get an A. The school has a few older PC’s
but there are always long lines of students waiting to use them during the
school day. After school, she usually works at a part-time job to help
support her family.
One evening, Jodinel visits the library of a private college few miles
from her family’s apartment, and she finds plenty of unused PC’s connected
to the Internet. She surreptitiously looks over the shoulder of another
student to learn a valid login/password combination. Jodinel returns to
the library several times a week, and by using its PC’s and printers she
efficiency completes the extra research projects, graduates from high
school with straight A’s and gets a full-ride scholarship to attend a
prestigious university.
Questions:
1. Did Jodinel do anything wrong?
Jodinel's approach to both the student and private school is
incorrect since she will be accused of stealing personal and school
information, but on the other hand, she just utilizes her wits to
complete a task that she found difficult due to a lack of resources.

2. Who benefited from Jodinel’s course of action?

The one who benefited from what she did was herself because, in
her case, she has a disadvantage because she lacks the resources to
complete the task, and in order to accomplish that, she needs to
gather different resources by devising different strategies to
compensate for those losses, and she does so by using her wits to gain
access to the school library.
3. Who was hurt by Jodinel’s course of action?
The student and the school have been impacted by her conduct
because the student will face serious consequences if the school
discovers that other students have acquired access to the library.
4. Did Jodinel have an unfair advantage over her high school classmates?
From the angle of perspective, she has the advantage when she
already has the access at the private school library but when you look
at when she doesn’t have those resources, she’s the one on the
disadvantage side since she doesn’t have the luxury of having her own
pc or having the time to use her school library’s PC.

5. Would any of your answers change if it turns out Jodinel did not win a
college scholarship after all and is now working at the Burger Barn?
Of course not, because she just did her best and suffered those
losses due to a lack of means to study, it is a big moral sacrifice
because she puts herself in danger of doing something undesirable in
the eyes of others.

6. Are there better ways Jodinel could have accomplished her objectives?
Based on her perspective, there are no other ways to complete the
task because she has already done what appears to her to be better
ways to complete the task; however, if there is another way, it is
from her classmates; she can still borrow a laptop or desktop or do a
group study with her classmates and gain relationships or friendships
in the process.
