3.1.2 Surveys and Investigations
Gamping, Yogyakarta
1.1 General
The main objective of the traffic survey is to collect basic data relating to the volume and
characteristics of traffic on roads that will have an impact on the Gamping Intersection,
Yogyakarta. In this context, information about the needs and characteristics of existing traffic
will be obtained through field data collection which includes an Intersection Count Survey.
1.1.1 Intersection Count Survey Location
Traffic survey location for Gamping Intersection, Yogyakarta. are shown in Figure 1-1 and
Figure 1-2 with details of the survey locations described further in the following sections.

b) Survey Method
Intersection count survey is carried out at each specified survey post. Each vehicle
passing through the survey post is recorded according to the type of vehicle and the
hourly traffic volume of each type of vehicle is calculated.
Survey method is to calculate the volume of vehicle traffic (cross-sectional vehicle
traffic count) accordingto the type of vehicle carried out by using a manual counting
tool against vehicles passing through the observation point. From each foot of the
intersection is calculated the amount of traffic to each direction of movement to the
other intersection. The survey was conducted for 3 days, conducted during the
morning peak hour at 06 to 21 pm.
c) Survey Equipment
1. Survey form
2. Pen/Pencil
3. Handboard
4. Lights
5. Camera
6. Counter
d) Survey Schedule
The traffic surveys were conducted during the month of July 2020. For each location,
the survey was conducted for 3 (three)days for 8 hours divided into 2 shift surveys.
The schedule is presented in Table 1.1:

The survey traffic counting team for each shift will consist of 1 supervisor and 4-8
surveyors depending on the amount of traffic observed. The duties of each personnel
are as follows:

Supervisor, is a field coordinator in each location of the survey post, carrying out
all surveyors in his post, is expected to prepare the needs of the continuity of the
survey at the site, collect and modulate the survey results data, regulate the
smoothness and readiness of the survey implementation.
Surveyor, is the executor of activities in each location of the survey post,
generally recruited at the location of the local survey post, tasked with collecting
data / carrying out traffic calculations in accordance with the provisions that have
been given and providing survey results data to supervisors.

It shows that the performance of the Gamping intersection at rush hour has exceeded the
capacity of the intersection with a saturation level of more than 100% and occurs at all
intersection legs, especially for national roads. For this reason, it is necessary to separate
vehicle movements through separation of non-level movements.
1.2.7 Alternative Improvement
Grade separation for traffic movement for Noth-Bound and south-bound, using fly-over
or underpass. Based on the traffic modelling for existing condition.
After the improvement using a flyover shows that the degree of saturation does not exceed
100% at each leg of intersection, especially on national roads which means grade sepatation is
adequate the intersection traffic movement service.
