Agriculture and

Fisheries
Economic
Learning Objectives

• Be able to identify the importance of Agriculture

and Fisheries in Economic Growth

• Evaluate the contribution of Agriculture and

Fishery to the economy

2
1 What is the importance
of Fisheries in economy?
Small-scale fisheries and aquaculture make critical contributions to
development in the areas of employment, with over 41 million people
worldwide, the vast majority of whom live in developing countries,
working in fish production; food security and nutrition, with fish
constituting an important source of nutrients for the poor and often
being the cheapest form of animal protein; and trade, with a third of
fishery commodity production in developing countries destined for
export. With most capture fisheries worldwide considered fully
exploited or overexploited, aquaculture will be central to meeting fish
demand, which will continue to increase with population growth, rising
incomes and increasing urbanization.
• The fisheries in the Philippines makes a significant
contribution to the national economy in terms of income and
employment. Total fish production was estimated at 4.65 million
metric tons, and the fisheries sector contributed almost 4.33
billion dollars to the country's economy in 2015 (BFAR, 2016).
• Fisheries is a very important industry in the Philippines. In terms
of contribution to the national Gross Value Added (GVA) in
Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry in 1997, fisheries contributed
18.5 percent, at constant prices, as against livestock and poultry
which contributed only 12.1% and 10.3% respectively.

5
Relationship between fish stock and growth rate
when there is no harvest

• When there is a small

fish stock, the growth of
population is low
• As there are more fish
in the water,
reproduction rates go
up, causing the
population to grow
• Eventually however,
due to crowding effects
and competition for
food, the growth rates
decline

6
Fish stock & growth rate when there is a harvesting

• When fishers begin to harvest, part or all of the growth that occurs in any
period is taken out (harvested)
• so that growth in the stock doesn’t take place or is reduced 25

Population dynamics
A fishery population is affected by three dynamic rate functions:
• Birth rate
• Growth rate
• Mortality

7
Fishery resources are represented by populations of animal and plant
organisms used by man, especially for human food purposes to produce fishmeal
for animal husbandry, aquaculture products as well as crafts and decoration of
various kinds.
Fishing is an important economic activity which provides food from the
sea and thereby creates employment not only for whoever (the fishermen)
directly collects that food (fish, crustaceans, molluscs) but also for those who
operate in the entire chain, from the construction of vessels and equipment
supplies related to the marketing of products.

1 What is the importance
of Agriculture?
Agriculture provides most of the world's food and fabrics.
Cotton, wool, and leather are all agricultural products.
Agriculture also provides wood for construction and paper
products. These products, as well as the agricultural
methods used, may vary from one part of the world to
another

10
Agriculture plays a critical role in transforming economies to
reach the goal, along with achieving other essential development
goals like ensuring food security and improving nutrition.
Therefore, in order to end hunger and undernutrition while
accelerating economic growth, agricultural transformation must
become a reality.

Agriculture plays a significant role in the Philippine economy.

Involving about 40 percent of Filipino workers, it contributes an
average of 20 percent to the Gross Domestic Product.

11
Agricultural modernization prepares conditions for industrialization
by boosting labor productivity, increasing agricultural surplus to
accumulate capital, and increasing foreign exchange via exports.
Modernization also helps achieve humanitarian goals by raising
incomes and productivity of poor farmers, lowering food prices, and
improving nutrition. Indeed, modernizing agriculture can improve
human capital by better nourishing the population and avoiding far-
reaching debilitative outcomes of malnutrition such as child stunting.

12
In developing countries, agriculture continues to be the main
source of employment, livelihood and income for between 50% -
90% of the population. Of this percentage, small farmers make the
up the majority, up to 70-95% of the farming population. Small
farmers are therefore a significant proportion of the population.

Agriculture provides employment opportunities for rural people on

a large scale in underdeveloped and developing countries.

13
The agriculture and fisheries sector
provides food and vital raw materials for the rest
of the economy. It is itself a significant market for
the products and services of the non- agricultural
economy.

14
“Agriculture is a fundamental source of
national prosperity.“
